Overview

The Whynter NEX Inverter Dual Hose Portable Air Conditioner is a versatile appliance designed to provide efficient cooling, heating (for specific models), dehumidification, and fan-only operation for indoor spaces. This unit incorporates innovative inverter technology and a dual-hose design to optimize performance and energy efficiency.

Function Description

The primary function of the Whynter NEX Portable Air Conditioner is to regulate indoor temperature and humidity. It offers several operational modes to suit different environmental needs:

  • Cooling Mode: In this mode, the air conditioner actively cools and dehumidifies the room. Hot air is extracted from the outdoor environment and exhausted through the dual-hose system, ensuring an independent and balanced cool air circulation indoors. The compressor activates within approximately 3 minutes of selecting this mode. The unit features a 5°F temperature cushion, meaning if the set temperature is within 5°F of the ambient temperature, the unit will operate in fan-only mode to save energy and prolong compressor life.
  • Dry (Dehumidifying) Only Mode: This mode focuses solely on dehumidifying the room. The compressor activates intermittently, and the fan speed is typically set to LOW, depending on the ambient temperature. While the exhaust hose is not strictly required for dehumidification, venting it will result in some cooling of the room. If the exhaust hose is not vented, the unit may require more frequent draining. This mode does not allow for specific humidity level settings.
  • Automatic Mode: When set to Auto mode, the unit intelligently selects between cooling or fan-only operation based on the user-selected temperature and the current room temperature. The fan speed is automatically controlled and cannot be manually adjusted in this mode.
  • Heat Mode (for ARC-1230WNH only): This specific model can also function as a heat pump, drawing heat from the outdoor air and transferring it indoors to warm the room. Similar to cooling, the compressor starts within 3-5 minutes of selecting this mode. The unit requires the pump drain hose to be installed for continuous water removal during Heat Mode.
  • Fan Only Mode: In this mode, the air conditioner's fan circulates air within the room without engaging the compressor for cooling or heating. The temperature cannot be set in this mode, but the fan speed can be adjusted. Venting the exhaust hose to the outside is optional.

The unit also features a Timer (Delayed Switch ON/OFF) Function, allowing users to program a delayed start or stop for the air conditioner. The timer can be set in increments of 0.5 hours up to 10 hours, and then 1-hour increments up to 24 hours.

The I SENSE Function, available via the remote control, transforms the remote into a remote thermostat. An efficient temperature sensor within the remote sends temperature signals to the air conditioner every 3 minutes, enabling precise and comfortable temperature control. This feature is not available in DRY and FAN modes and requires the remote to be within 26 feet of the indoor unit.

Sleep Mode is designed to increase comfort and conserve energy during sleep. In cooling mode, the set temperature gradually increases by 1°C/2°F over the first 30 minutes, and again after another 30 minutes, maintaining this new temperature for 7 hours. This mode also decreases noise levels. Sleep Mode is not available in FAN or DRY modes.

In the event of a power outage, the Auto Restart feature ensures that the air conditioner resumes operation at its previously set function mode and settings once power is restored.

Usage Features

The Whynter NEX Portable Air Conditioner is designed for user convenience and optimal performance.

  • Control Panel and Remote Control: The unit can be operated using either the integrated control panel or the included LCD remote control. The control panel features intuitive buttons for Swing/Wireless Mode, Timer, Mode selection, Up/Down temperature/timer adjustment, Fan speed, Sleep, Filter, and Power. The remote control provides comprehensive control over all functions, including I SENSE, Lock settings, and LED display on/off.
  • Wireless Connectivity (Wi-Fi enabled models only): For Wi-Fi enabled models, the unit can be connected to a wireless network, allowing control via a smartphone app. The wireless indicator on the control panel illuminates when connected.
  • Adjustable Airflow: The unit features louvers that can be set to Auto-Swing for continuous air movement or fixed at a desired angle.
  • Dual Hose Installation: The innovative hose-in-hose design, which includes an air intake hose and an exhaust hose, ensures efficient cooling by drawing and expelling air from the outdoor environment. This setup prevents heat leakage and promotes rapid cooling. The hoses and adapters are installed or removed based on the selected operating mode.
  • Portability: Equipped with wheel casters, the unit can be easily moved to different locations.
  • Temperature Display: The LED display shows the set temperature in either Fahrenheit or Celsius, which can be toggled by pressing and holding the Up and Down buttons for 3 seconds. In FAN mode, it displays the room temperature.
  • Fan Speed Control: Users can select from Continuous, Auto, Low, Medium, and High fan speeds. In Auto and Dry modes, continuous fan speed is disabled, but a continuous fan speed can be selected by pressing and holding the FAN button.
  • Compressor Lock Out: To prevent overheating and circuit breaker tripping, the compressor circuit has an automatic 3-minute time-delayed start if the unit is turned off and on quickly.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for ensuring the longevity and efficient operation of the Whynter NEX Portable Air Conditioner.

  • Unit Cleaning: Before cleaning, the appliance must be unplugged. The cabinet should be cleaned with a lukewarm damp cloth and a neutral detergent, then dried with a lint-free cloth. Flammable liquids, paint thinners, or other chemicals should not be used. The unit should never be washed under running water or with a hose to avoid electrical damage.
  • Air Filter Cleaning: The air filter should be cleaned every two weeks for optimal performance. In households with pets, more frequent cleaning may be necessary. To clean, switch off the unit, gently push the exhaust hose backward and lift it up, then remove the filter. Loose dust can be removed with a vacuum cleaner or by tapping the filter lightly. The filter should then be rinsed thoroughly under warm running water (not exceeding 100°F) and dried completely before re-insertion. The Filter Indicator Light illuminates after 250 hours of operation as a reminder to clean the air filter.
  • Water Drainage: The unit has an internal drain pan that, when full, triggers an alarm (P1 error code) and stops cooling/dehumidifying.
    • Drain Plug: For manual drainage, the bottom drain plug can be removed to allow water to drain completely.
    • Continuous Gravity Drain: For continuous drainage during Dry mode, the upper drain plug can be removed, and the provided drain hose attached. The hose should be placed over a floor drain or sink, ensuring it goes straight down without kinks or bends for proper gravity-fed drainage.
    • Heat Pump Drainage (for ARC-1230WNH only): This model includes a condensate pump for continuous water removal during Heat Mode. The heat pump drain plug should be removed, and the drain hose installed and directed to a drain area. The condensate pump only operates in Heat Mode.
  • Long-Term Storage: For storage, all water must be drained from the appliance. The unit should be run in Fan mode for half a day in a warm room to dry its interior and prevent mold. After drying, turn off and unplug the unit, wrap the cord, and remove batteries from the remote control. Clean and reinstall the air filters. Store the appliance in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight or extreme heat.
  • Error Codes: The unit displays error codes (e.g., E1, E2, E3, E4 for sensor errors; P1 for full water reservoir) to indicate specific issues. For sensor errors, unplugging and restarting the unit after 5 minutes is recommended. For persistent errors, contacting customer support is advised.
