Overview

The Whynter ECO-FRIENDLY 12,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner (Model#: ARC-12SD) is designed to provide efficient cooling and dehumidification for indoor spaces. This portable unit offers a range of features for user convenience and optimal performance.

Function Description

The primary function of this device is to cool and dehumidify a room. It operates in three main modes: COOL, DEHUMIDIFYING, and FAN ONLY. In COOL mode, the air conditioner actively cools the room while also dehumidifying it. Hot air generated during this process is exhausted outside through a dedicated hose. The unit allows for temperature settings between 61°F and 89°F. A 5°F temperature cushion is built-in, meaning if the set temperature is within 5°F of the ambient temperature, the unit will run in fan-only mode to save energy and prolong compressor life. Once the set temperature is reached, the fan continues to run.

In DEHUMIDIFYING mode, the unit focuses solely on removing moisture from the air. The compressor activates intermittently, and the fan speed is set to LOW if the room temperature is below 77°F, but can be adjusted if it's higher. In this mode, the exhaust hose is not required, and the warm air returns to the room. However, if the warm air is exhausted outside, some cooling may occur. Manual water drainage is required in this mode, though continuous drainage can be set up by removing the upper drain stopper and connecting a garden hose to a container or floor drain.

FAN ONLY mode circulates air within the room without cooling or dehumidifying. In this mode, the temperature cannot be set, but the fan speed can be adjusted. The exhaust hose is also not required for this mode.

The unit features a Timer function, allowing for delayed switch ON or OFF, adjustable between 1 and 24 hours. This provides flexibility for users to schedule operation according to their needs. An Auto Restart feature ensures that in the event of a power outage, the air conditioner resumes operation with its previously set function mode and settings once power is restored.

Usage Features

The Whynter portable air conditioner can be controlled via its integrated control panel or a remote control. The control panel displays the set temperature in COOL mode and the room temperature in DEHUMIDIFYING and FAN ONLY modes. Users can switch between Fahrenheit and Celsius by pressing and holding the Up and Down buttons for 3 seconds.

The unit is designed for easy mobility, equipped with casters for rolling on smooth, flat surfaces. When positioning the unit, it's crucial to ensure at least 20 inches of clearance around the air inlet and outlet for efficient air conditioning. The exhaust hoses, which are essential for COOL mode, connect to the unit and a window slider kit. The window kit is designed to fit most standard vertical and horizontal windows, and can be modified if necessary. The exhaust hoses should only be extended to the necessary length, with a maximum recommended length of 9 feet to maintain cooling efficiency.

The remote control offers convenient operation from a distance, allowing users to power the unit on/off, select modes, adjust fan speed, and set the timer and temperature. It uses two AAA 1.5V batteries, which should be replaced simultaneously.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for the optimal performance and longevity of the air conditioner. The unit is equipped with a washable Pre-Filter and an Activated Carbon Filter. The Pre-Filter removes large particles like dust, pet hair, and dander, and should be cleaned at least every two weeks. Cleaning involves removing the filter frame, detaching the Pre-Filter, using a vacuum cleaner or lightly tapping to remove loose debris, and then rinsing it under warm or cold water (not hotter than 100°F). It must be thoroughly dried before re-insertion.

The Activated Carbon Filter is designed to remove smoke and other odors. It is not washable and should be replaced every 2-3 months or as needed. It is important to never operate the air conditioner without the Pre-Filter in place.

For general cleaning of the unit's body, a soft damp cloth should be used. Harsh chemicals, oil-based products, detergents, or chemically treated cloths should be avoided as they can damage the unit's finish.

Water drainage is a key maintenance aspect. During cooling, water is extracted from the air. While most of this water is used to cool and exhaust to the outside, in high humidity or low-temperature environments, water will collect in an internal reservoir. If the reservoir becomes full, the compressor will stop, and a warning light will illuminate. To resume cooling, the water must be drained manually by turning off the unit, positioning a container under the drain plug, and removing the plug. For continuous drainage in COOL or DRY modes, the upper drain plug can be removed, and a garden hose can be attached to direct water to a drain area.

For end-of-season storage, the unit should be turned off, unplugged, and all water completely drained. The air filters should be cleaned. It is recommended to run the unit in Fan Only mode for half a day on a warm day to ensure the interior dries out completely. The power cord should be wrapped and bundled, and batteries should be removed from the remote control. The exhaust hose should be disconnected, and the window/wall hole covered. Storing the unit in its original carton is recommended.
