This document is an Owner's Manual for the Yamaha YN50E/YN50EM scooter, produced by MBK Industrie. It provides comprehensive information on the operation, inspection, and maintenance of the vehicle, emphasizing safety and proper riding techniques.
General Description and Safety:
The Yamaha YN50E/YN50EM is a single-track scooter designed to carry an operator and a passenger. It is crucial to read the manual carefully before operation to ensure safe use and prevent accidents or injuries. The manual highlights the importance of proper training and instruction for beginners, recommending certified instructors. It also stresses the need for operators to be conspicuous in traffic, advising the use of brightly colored jackets and extra caution at intersections. Regular pre-operation checks are essential to ensure the vehicle is in safe operating condition. The manual warns against operating the scooter without proper knowledge and recommends contacting an authorized Yamaha dealer for technical service and maintenance.
The manual uses specific notations to distinguish important information:
- Safety Alert Symbol (!): Alerts to potential personal injury hazards, requiring adherence to safety messages to avoid injury or death.
- WARNING: Indicates a hazardous situation that, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injury.
- NOTICE: Indicates special precautions to be taken to avoid damage to the vehicle or other property.
- TIP: Provides key information to make procedures easier or clearer.
Product and specifications are subject to change without notice.
Controls and Instruments:
The scooter features a main switch/steering lock that controls the ignition and lighting systems and locks the steering.
- OFF (X): All electrical systems are off, and the key can be removed.
- ON (O): All electrical circuits are supplied with power, and the engine can be started. The headlight, meter lighting, and taillight come on automatically when the engine is started. The key cannot be removed.
- CHECK ( ): The 2-stroke engine oil level warning light should come on.
- LOCK ( ): The steering is locked, and all electrical systems are off. The key can be removed.
The manual warns against turning the key to "X" or " " while the vehicle is moving, as this can switch off electrical systems, leading to loss of control or an accident.
The instrument panel includes:
- High beam indicator light (O): Comes on when the high beam is activated.
- Turn signal indicator light ( / ): Flashes when the turn signal switch is pushed left or right.
- 2-stroke engine oil level warning light ( ): Comes on when the key is in the "O" position or if the oil level is low during operation. If it comes on during operation, the oil tank should be refilled immediately with Yamalube 2 or equivalent 2-stroke engine oil (JASO grade “FC” or ISO grades "EG-C" or "EG-D").
- Fuel level warning light ( ): Comes on when the fuel level drops below approximately 1.5 L (0.40 US gal, 0.33 Imp.gal).
- Speedometer unit: Displays riding speed.
- Odometer: Shows the total distance traveled.
Handlebar switches include:
- Dimmer switch ( / ): Sets to "O" for high beam and "0" for low beam.
- Turn signal switch ( / ): Signals right or left turns.
- Horn switch ( ): Sounds the horn.
The front brake lever is on the right handlebar, and the rear brake lever is on the left.
Fuel and Oil:
- Fuel tank capacity: 6.1 L (1.61 US gal, 1.34 Imp.gal).

Catalytic Converter:
The scooter is equipped with a catalytic converter in the exhaust system.
- WARNING: The exhaust system becomes hot. Do not park near flammable materials or in areas where pedestrians or children might touch it. Do not allow the engine to idle for more than a few minutes, as prolonged idling can cause a build-up of heat.
- NOTICE: Use only unleaded gasoline to avoid damage to the catalytic converter.
Kickstarter:
Used to start the engine by pushing the lever down smoothly and forcefully.
Seat and Storage:
The seat can be opened by turning the key counterclockwise to "OPEN" in the main switch.
- Storage compartment: Located under the seat, with a load limit of 5 kg (11.0 lb). The maximum load for the vehicle is 163 kg (359 lb).
- NOTICE: Do not store heat-susceptible, consumable, or flammable items due to heat accumulation. Wrap wet articles in plastic bags to prevent humidity. Do not store valuable or breakable items.
- Luggage hook: Load limit of 3 kg (6.6 lb).
Operation and Riding Points:
- Starting a cold engine: Turn the key to "O", wait for the oil level warning light, then turn to "O". Close the throttle completely and start the engine by pushing the kickstarter lever while applying the front or rear brake.
- NOTICE: Never accelerate hard when the engine is cold to maximize engine life.
- Engine break-in: Critical for the first 1000 km (600 mi).
- 0-150 km (0–90 mi): Avoid prolonged operation above 1/3 throttle. Vary speed.
- 150-500 km (90–300 mi): Avoid prolonged operation above 1/2 throttle.
- 500-1000 km (300–600 mi): Avoid cruising speeds in excess of 3/4 throttle.
- After 1000 km (600 mi): Change the final transmission oil.
- Parking: Stop the engine and remove the key.
- WARNING: Engine and exhaust system become very hot. Park in a safe place away from pedestrians, children, slopes, soft ground, or flammable materials.
Periodic Maintenance and Adjustment:
Regular inspection, adjustment, and lubrication are crucial for safety and efficiency.
- WARNING: Turn off the engine during maintenance unless specified. A running engine has moving parts, can cause shocks or fires, and produces carbon monoxide. Brake components can be very hot; allow them to cool before touching.
