How to fix an open ignitor circuit on A.O. Smith Water Heater?
    • J
      julie77Aug 7, 2025
If the Intelli-Vent™ control detects an open ignitor circuit in your A.O. Smith Water Heater, try these steps: 1. Inspect the wiring to the hot surface ignitor, and replace the ignitor assembly if any damage or wear is found. 2. Check the ignitor assembly plug and the socket on the Intelli-Vent™ body to ensure a good connection. Replace the ignitor assembly and/or control if necessary. 3. Measure the resistance of the ignitor at room temperature (77ºF or 25°C) at the plug end. Replace the ignitor if the resistance is not between 11.5 and 18.8 ohms. 4. If all the above tests pass and the error persists, replace the Intelli-Vent™ control.

If the pressure switch circuit remains closed for more than 5 seconds after the heating cycle begins and the blower doesn't start on your A.O. Smith Water Heater, take these steps: * Ensure the air pressure switch circuit wiring is correct and the air pressure switch is not jumpered. * Cut power to the water heater, then check the continuity of the air pressure switch contacts with the wires disconnected. * If the pressure switch contacts show continuity (closed circuit), replace the pressure switch. * If the pressure switch contacts are open and all wiring is correct, turn the power off for 10-20 seconds then on again to clear the error code. If the error code persists, replace the Intelli-Vent™ control.

If the pressure switch circuit remains open longer than 5 seconds after the blower is energized in your A.O. Smith Water Heater, here's what to check: * First, make sure the blower is running by checking for 120 VAC to the blower when the heating cycle begins and inspect the wiring. * If the blower isn't getting power, consider replacing the Intelli-Vent™ control. * If the blower is getting power but failing to start, replace the blower assembly. * Also, ensure the air pressure switch sensing tube is properly connected and not kinked or damaged. * Check the continuity of the vent temperature limit switch, and replace it if the contacts remain open under 160ºF (71°C). * Verify that the correct size of vent pipe (2”, 3”, 4”) was used per the installation manual for vent length, ...
