Security Settings
On no account should you use Open System or Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) set-
tings, whether out of convenience or in order to avoid configuration problems, unless
of course you want to start up an Internet Cafe!
Activate the Wifi Protected Access (WPA) option.
Under Type select the “WPA v.1”setting. If you are running the Microsoft Windows
XP operating system from ServicePack2 or higher on your computer, you can use
the “WPA v.2” setting.
For standard operation select the Pre-Shared Key option. Enter a password in the
Value input field and leave it set to Tex t. Use a password with the following char-
acteristics:
No words or names that can be found in a dictionary
At least 8 characters long
It should also include numbers, a mixture of upper and lower case and special
characters
You could also use the Generate button to generate a password. Some WLAN con-
figuration software does not convert text into hexadecimal values as a standard
procedure. If this is the case, go to the Hex Value setting and select the Generate
button.
Leave the Cipher Length setting at 256 Bit and the Distribution Interval setting
at 120 seconds. You will not usually need the settings for WME or for configuring
Multiple SSIDs for standard operation.
Tip: If you are running an Internet-Cafe without using powerful en-
cryption, you should, for the sake of your customers’ security,
prevent them from being able to access each others’ computers.
Activate the BSS Isolation option. You can also stop unpleasant
guests from using the system with a MAC Address Filter – but
this will not hold up users who know about this function for long.
