Overview

The Adastra RMS605 is a 1U 5-zone mixer-amplifier designed for sound systems, offering versatile audio distribution and control across multiple zones. This unit functions as a 5-zone 100V power amplifier, capable of driving loudspeakers in various configurations. Its primary role is to mix and amplify audio signals, distributing them to up to five independent output zones.

Function Description

The RMS605 features five independent speaker output channels, allowing it to be used as a 5-way slave amplifier. Each channel can be configured for individual input or can share a common AUX input. The amplifier supports both 100V line and 4Ω speaker connections, providing flexibility for different speaker types and installations.

For input, the device offers a dedicated Paging Mic input, which is always live to all output channels, making it suitable for announcements and alerts. This input includes BASS and TREBLE EQ controls, as well as a GAIN control for adjusting the microphone's tonal balance and level. A signal indicator provides visual feedback for the paging microphone input.

In addition to the paging microphone, the RMS605 provides multiple line-level inputs. Each of the five output channels has individual RCA inputs and Euroblock terminal inputs, which are summed to mono if both are used for a single channel. For scenarios where multiple channels share the same audio source, a global AUX input (RCA) is available. An AUX/CH switch for each channel allows users to select between the individual channel input or the global AUX input, offering convenience for switching sources as needed.

The amplifier incorporates a VOX (Voice Operated Switch) function for the paging microphone, which, when activated, mutes all other inputs when sound is detected through the paging microphone. The sensitivity of this muting effect can be adjusted via a rotary trim control on the rear panel. Phantom power can also be enabled for condenser microphones connected to the XLR paging input.

For emergency situations, the RMS605 includes 24V emergency mute terminals. When a 24V trigger from an alarm panel is applied to these contacts, all inputs except for channel 1 (which typically carries emergency announcements) are muted, ensuring critical messages can be heard.

Each of the five output zones features independent LEVEL controls for adjusting the output volume. BASS and TREBLE tone controls are also provided for each output channel, allowing for precise tonal adjustments in each zone. Status indicators for each output channel provide visual feedback on the signal presence.

The front panel includes a power on/off switch and a power on indicator. The rear panel houses the IEC mains inlet with a fuse holder for power connection.

Usage Features

The RMS605 is designed for ease of use and flexible installation. It can be used free-standing or fixed into a standard 19-inch rack, requiring adequate support and access to controls and connectors when rack-mounting.

Connecting speakers involves screw terminals on removable modular connectors. For 100V line speakers, the "100V" terminal block is used, while 4Ω speakers connect to the "4Ω" terminal block. It is crucial not to connect to both 4Ω and 100V terminals for any individual output channel, nor to mix 4Ω and 100V speakers on a single output. When connecting multiple 100V speakers, they should be wired in parallel, ensuring the total load remains below the specified wattage. For 4Ω speakers, the load should not be lower than 4Ω for each output.

Input connections are straightforward. RCA inputs for individual channels and the global AUX input are provided. Euroblock terminals offer an alternative for individual channel inputs, allowing for balanced or unbalanced connections. The green block can be removed for easier wiring.

Before powering on, all output rotary level controls should be turned fully down to prevent loud noises. BASS and TREBLE tone controls should be set to the vertical (zero) position initially. Once connections are made, power can be switched on, and levels gradually increased to check output in each zone. Tone controls can then be adjusted as needed, with the 12 o'clock position representing zero, and rotation left decreasing bass/treble while rotation right increases it.

The paging microphone input's GAIN control should be adjusted to achieve clear and intelligible speech through all channels. The VOX sensitivity control on the rear panel allows fine-tuning of the voice override function, ensuring announcements are heard over background music without being overly sensitive to ambient noise.

After use, all LEVEL controls should be turned down before powering off the unit to avoid loud pops or clicks through the speakers.

Maintenance Features

The RMS605 is designed with safety and longevity in mind. For cleaning, a soft cloth with a neutral detergent can be used to clean the housing as required. Strong solvents should not be used for cleaning the unit.

The device contains no user-serviceable parts inside, and the case should not be opened. All servicing should be referred to qualified service personnel. In case of malfunction, water ingress, or other damage, professional service should be consulted.

The unit should be installed according to specifications, away from heat sources or heating appliances. It should not be used near water or in wet areas, nor should liquids be spilled on the housing. If liquids are spilled, the unit should be immediately stopped, allowed to dry out, and checked by qualified personnel before further use.

The mains lead provided should be used, and care taken to avoid damage to the cable or connectors. The power should be unplugged from the mains during stormy weather or if the unit is unused for long periods.

The apparatus must be connected to a mains socket with a protective EARTH connection, and the correct operation of the mains switch should be ensured. Terminals marked with the lightning bolt symbol are hazardous live and should only be connected by qualified personnel.

The product's "Crossed Wheelie Bin" symbol indicates that it is electrical or electronic equipment and should not be disposed of with other household or commercial waste at the end of its useful life. Goods must be disposed of according to local council guidelines.
