Signal impairments
The Signal Studio software provides a straightforward graphical menu for adding
impairments to the Bluetooth signal. Custom- and standards-based dirty transmitter
impairments can be added to the Bluetooth signal. See Figure 24.
In general, the impairments are derived from the frequency and modulation tolerances
specified for Bluetooth transmitters. Adding these impairments enables the evaluation of
receiver performance with signals realistically anticipated from Bluetooth transmitters.
All impairments required by the Bluetooth RF Test Specification to perform single- and
multi-slot sensitivity tests are provided in Signal Studio for Bluetooth.
The full complement of impairment conditions can be used for testing a given frequency,
or a study can be done to determine the greatest contributors to error in symbol timing
recovery. Many of the specified impairment conditions are not stressing enough to
access the design limitations of the devices. These studies would allow the designer
to optimize the receiver algorithms for symbol recovery, and extend the sensitivity
levels achieved.
Dirty transmitter impairments
Clicking the Dirty Transmitter Impairments Setup button in the Signal Generation Setup
menu brings up the Dirty Transmitter Test configuration menu. See Figure 25. This menu
is completely independent of the main Signal Studio for Bluetooth menu. The settings in
the Dirty Transmitter Test configuration menu are not coupled with the main Signal Studio
for Bluetooth menu, and vice versa. While the Dirty Transmitter Test configuration menu
is active, settings in the main Signal Studio for Bluetooth menu are disabled and cannot
be modified until the Dirty Transmitter Test menu is closed.
