Preface
Storage in packing box
If storage of the heat exchange r after delivery is known
in advance, inform Alfa Laval when orderi ng the heat
excha nger to ensure that it wi ll be properly prepare d for
storage before packing.
Indoo r storage
• Store inside a room with the temperature between
15 and 20°C ( 60–70°F) and humidity up to 70%. For
outdoor storage read “Outdoor storage” on this page.
• To prevent dama ge to t he gaskets, there should not be
any ozone-producing equipme nt in the room such as
electric motors or welding equipment.
• To prevent damage to t he gaskets, do not store organic
solvents or acids in the room and avoid direct sunligh t,
intens ive heat radiation or ultraviolet radiation.
• The tigh tening bolts should be well covered with a thin
layer of grease. Refer to “Closing” on p age 26.
Outdoor storage
If you need to store your heat exchanger ou tdoors, follow
all the precauti ons in the “Indoor storage” section as well as
the precautions listed belo w.
The stored heat exch anger shall be visually checked ev ery
third mo nth. When closi ng the packing it shall be restored
to original condition. The check includes:
• Greasing of the tightening bolts
• Metal port covers
• Protection of the plate pack and gaskets
• The packing
Taken out of service
If, for an y reason, the heat exc hanger is shut down a nd
taken out of service for a long period of time, follow the
precautions in the section ”Indoor storage” on this page.
However, before storage the following actions must be
done.
• Ch eck the measurement of the plate pack (measur
e
betwe en frame plate and pressure plate, the
A
dimension ).
• Drain both media sides of t he heat exc
hanger.
• De pending on media, the heat exch
anger should be
rinsed and then dried.
• The con nection should be c
overed i f the piping system
is not connected. Use a
pl astic or plywood cover for
the connecti
on.
• Co ver the p
late pack with non-transparent plastic film.
Start-up after long-term o ut of service
If the heat exchanger has been taken out of service for an
extensive p eriod of time, longer than one year, the risk of
le akage when starting u p incr eases. To avoid this problem
it is recommended to let the gasket rubber rest to regain
m ost of its elasticity.
1. If the h eat exchanger is not in pos ition, f ollow the
in structions “I nstallation” on p age 11.
2. Note the measu rement between frame plate and
pressure plate (A dimension).
3. Remove the feet attached to the pressure plate.
4. Loosen the tightening bolts. Follow the instruction s
“Opening” on page 20. Open the heat exchanger until
the mea sure A is 1.25.
5. Leave the heat exchan ger for 24–48 hours, the longer
the better, for gaskets to relax.
6. Re-tighten according to the instructions “Closing” on
page 26.
7. Alfa Laval r ecommends a hydraulic test sho uld be
carried out. The media, usually water, should be
entered at intervals to avoid sudden shocks to the heat
excha nger. It is recommended to test up to the Design
Pressure. Refer to the PHE drawing.
Environmental compliance
Alfa Laval endeavours to perform its o wn operations
as cleanly and efficiently as possible, and to take
environmental aspects into consideration when d eveloping,
designing, manufacturing, servicing and marketing its
products.
Unpacking
Packing material con sists of wood, plastics, cardboard
boxes and, in some cases, metal strap s.
• Wood and cardboard boxes can be reuse d, recycled or
used for energy recovery.
• Plastics should be recycled or burnt at a licensed waste
in cine ration plant.
• Metal straps should be sent for material recycling.
M aintenance
• All metal parts should be sent for materia l recycling.
• Oil and all non-metal wear parts must be ta ken care of
in acco rdance with local re gulations.
Scrapping
At end of use, the equipment shall be recycled according
to relevant, local re
gulations. Besides the equipment itself,
any hazardous residues from the process liquid must be
considered and dealt with in a proper manner. When in
doubt, or i
n the absence of local regulations, please contact
the local Alfa Laval sales company.
