Do you have a question about the ATB AQUAmax BASIC and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The AQUAMAX® BASIC/CLASSIC is a small wastewater treatment plant designed for the aerobic biological treatment of domestic and comparable wastewater from single or several buildings, serving up to 75 PE (Person Equivalents). Its dimensioning, design, and operation are in accordance with EN 12566-3 for up to 50 PE.

Function Description:

The AQUAMAX® system operates by treating wastewater through an activated sludge principle, utilizing microorganisms to break down suspended contaminants. The process begins with coarse interception of wastewater. Every 2 hours, a submersible pump transfers retained wastewater to the aeration stage. The aeration motor operates intermittently, and a submersible motor aerator or compressor ensures oxygen availability for the microorganisms. After 8 hours, with the end of the clarified water removal, the cycle ends, and a new one begins. The control unit manages the process, and commissioning sets the maximum number of connected persons. A modification of this setting is not required with short-term over or underloading. The plant achieves its full treatment performance after a run-up period of approximately one month. In cases of extreme underloading or temperatures under 12°C, the plant can take longer to develop completely, requiring increased activated sludge in order to accelerate the process. The AQUAMAX® BASIC version simplifies the process by removing excess sludge and drawing off clarified water using only one pump, with wastewater fed into individual areas using a patented hydraulic system.

Holiday / Energy-Saving Operation:

If no wastewater flows into the plant for more than 4 hours, the system automatically switches to an energy-saving holiday operation. Aeration time is reduced to ensure just enough oxygen for microorganisms. With normal loading, the plant reverts to the set operating mode.

Sampling:

For sampling, treated water is collected in a 1.5 L sampling bottle in the filtering tank, easily accessible from above. Alternatively, a separate sampling shaft can be used.

Technical Specifications:

The AQUAMAX® consists of the following electrical units:

  • 1 (BASIC) or 2 submersible pump(s)
  • 1 float switch
  • 1 or 2 submersible motor aerator(s) or compressor(s)
  • 1 control unit

All units are designed for 230V, 50 Hz. The electrical components are subject to systematic wear, with individual components potentially needing replacement after 2 years. The expected service life of the units is between 5 and 10 years.

Treatment Performance:

Under standard conditions and correct operation, the AQUAMAX® meets the following limiting values:

  • BOD5: 20 mg/l
  • COD: 90 mg/l
  • NH4N (>12°C): 10 mg/l
  • Ntot: 25 mg/l (>12°C)

Control Unit ATBcontrol® 3 - Connect Features:

  • Microprocessor controlled

  • Accumulators: 2xNiMH, 1.2V, Type AA, 2,100 mAh; Service life: 1000 charge/discharge cycles with trickle charge: min. 3 years; with trickle charge: min. 3 years.

Usage Features:

The control unit is operated via three short-stroke keys. Pressing a key switches on the display illumination (which turns off if no key is operated within 5 minutes).

  • Up/Down Arrows: Scroll upwards or downwards / menu selection.
  • OK Button: Transition of cursor to the character to be changed / value input is saved / selection of menu point / menu setback.
  • Temperature Sensitivity: At temperatures below 0°C, the LC display's function is severely limited.

Commissioning:

First commissioning involves basic settings and tests. All important parameters are pre-set. However, it is recommended to check the parameters, as false values can lead to increased power consumption. Modifications are possible in Service Mode.

Mobile Access via WiFi-Direct:

The ATBcontrol® 3 Connect allows convenient access to settings and changes using a mobile device (smartphone, tablet, laptop) up to approximately 25 meters from the control unit. This feature enables monitoring run times, power consumption, and gaining insight into logbooks. The control unit provides a local WiFi network for connection. To connect, enter the password (default: ATBWATER) and the IP address (192.168.1.123) in a browser to access the user interface.

Maintenance Features:

Small wastewater treatment plants require regular checks by the operator and twice-yearly servicing by a specialist for correct operation. Sludge removal from the primary settling stage is typically done once a year or as needed, depending on utilization. Routine maintenance tasks and examinations are carried out at regular intervals, with numbers and requirements detailed in the routine maintenance schedule approved by the lower water authority. A yearly routine maintenance is sufficient if the biological effectiveness is at the forefront. The treated wastewater is examined with regard to different parameters, as specified by the lower water authority.

  • Inspection of the operating logbook, the electrical logbook, and reading of operating hours to determine regularity of operation.
  • Extraction of AQUAMAX® and, if necessary, existing braids or similar in the units.
  • Functional check of operationally important mechanical, electrical, and other plant components (e.g., pump(s), float switch, control unit).
  • Functional check of the roof (overhead) ventilation.
  • Adjustment of optimum operating values (e.g., oxygen supply, sludge volume).
  • Determination of sludge height in the sludge storage and, if required, arrangement of sludge removal.
  • Carrying out general cleaning tasks (e.g., removal of deposits, removal of foreign bodies).
  • Examination of the structural condition of the plant (e.g., corrosion, accessibility, ventilation, screwed couplings, hoses).

Fault Diagnosis:

The manual provides a comprehensive troubleshooting guide for various issues, including:

  • No indication on the control display.
  • Acoustic alarm sounds with no display indication.
  • "Fault" messages with descriptions of involved electrical units.
  • Unsatisfactory treatment performance.
  • High water levels in the primary settling stage or both stages.
  • "Flooding alarm" or "Energy-saving operation" indications.

For each fault, possible causes and rectification steps are provided, including checking electrical connections, fuses, pump functionality, and calling service if necessary.
