Introduction
Thank you for shopping the Auber WS series temperature controller. We sincerely appreciate
your decision and trust that our controller will meet your expectations in both the quality of the
result and the value of the product. While we are delighted that you may be anxious to operate
the controller, please still spend a few minutes reading through this manual because this will
serve to enhance your experience in the months and years ahead. In particular, we urge you to
read through the safety warnings below. Although this plug-and-play controller is very easy to
use, the process involves high temperature and high wattage appliances and your safety is
paramount.
SAFETY WARNINGS
This controller is designed only to be used with limited-power device and paring thermal
cutoff protection such as a thermostat or thermal.
Do not place any objects on the top of controller surface because that may prevent
venting excess heat during its operation.
The controller can handle a maximum current up to 15 Ampere. For 120 VAC in US or
Canada, this limits the heater power to 1800 watts. Due to its compact size and the
splash proof design for kitchen applications, the controller has a limited ability to dissipate
the heat generated by the internal solid state relay during the initial heat up. The initial full
power heat up process cannot be more than 90 minutes. If you system need take longer
time to warm up, please read Appendix 1 “Managing the heat generated by the
controller

Overview

The Auber Instruments WS-1510ELPM is a precision PID temperature controller designed for various heating and cooling applications, particularly suitable for sous vide cooking. It offers advanced control features, programmability, and safety mechanisms to ensure accurate and reliable temperature management.

Function Description:

The WS-1510ELPM controller precisely regulates temperature using a Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) control algorithm. It can be programmed with up to six temperature and time steps, allowing users to create complex temperature profiles for different cooking or processing needs. The controller monitors the temperature via a Pt100 RTD sensor and adjusts the power output to the connected heating or cooling device to maintain the desired temperature. It features an LED display for current temperature, step number, and total running time, along with indicators for output status, alarm, and timer. The controller supports both heating (reversed action) and cooling (direct action) modes, and can also operate in a simpler ON/OFF mode. Safety features include high and low limit alarms, an open loop alarm, and an anti-short cycle delay for cooling applications. The device also allows for saving and recalling up to eight custom recipes, enhancing user convenience for repetitive tasks.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Input Voltage: 100 to 240 VAC, 50/60 Hz.
  • Output Voltage: Same as input voltage.
  • Maximum Current: 15A at 120V, 12A at 240V.
  • Fuse Size: 15A fast blow fuse.
  • Control Action: Heating (reversed action) or cooling (direct action).
  • Control Mode: PID, PI, PD, P, or ON/OFF.
  • Output Switching Device: Built-in optically isolated solid state relay (SSR) with zero voltage crossing switching.
  • Sensor Type: Three-wire Pt100 RTD sensor.
  • Sensor Tip Dimensions: 4 mm diameter x 50 mm long.
  • Sensor Cable Length: 6 ft (915 mm).
  • Alarm: High limit alarm and open loop alarm with LED and buzzer.
  • Timer Range: 1 to 9999 minutes for each step (6 steps total).
  • Temperature Resolution: 1 °C or 1 °F.
  • Temperature Display Range: -50 to 400 °C or -58 to 752 °F.
  • Temperature Accuracy: ±1 °C (±1 °F).
  • Dimensions (W x H x D): 6 x 3 x 8.3 inches (155 x 80 x 210 mm).
  • Weight: 3.2 lb (1.5 kg).
  • Warranty: 1 year for controller, 90 days for sensor.

Usage Features:

  • Multi-Step Programming: Users can program up to six sequential temperature and time steps (C-X and t-X) to create detailed cooking or processing profiles. The time unit is in minutes with 1-minute resolution.
  • Intuitive Interface: Programming is done via SET, "+", and "-" keys, with an LED display showing parameters and values. An editing indicator (a flashing dot) signifies when a value is editable.
  • Recipe Storage and Recall: The controller can save up to eight custom temperature profiles (recipes) with pre-named slots (e.g., B1 for beef, C1 for chicken). These recipes can be easily recalled, overwriting the current program.
  • Single-Step Mode: For continuous temperature holding at a single set point (C-1), the controller can be set to a single-step mode, simplifying operation for basic tasks.
  • Parameter Configuration: Advanced users can adjust control parameters such as Proportional Band (P), Integral Constant (I), Derivative Constant (d), and Cycle Rate (t) to fine-tune performance. An auto-tuning (AT) function helps optimize PID parameters for specific setups.
  • Output Power Reduction (OUT): This feature allows users to limit the maximum power delivered to the heater, useful for powerful heaters with small water volumes or when the cooker's power exceeds the controller's continuous handling capacity.
  • Temperature Unit Selection (C-F): Users can switch between Celsius and Fahrenheit display units.
  • Mode Selection (Mod): Choose between PID, Cool (ON/OFF cooling), or Heat (ON/OFF heating) modes.
  • Hysteresis Band (Hy): Configurable for ON/OFF control modes to define the temperature range for switching the output.
  • Anti-Short Cycle Delay (AS): For cooling applications, this delay prevents rapid cycling of compressors, extending their lifespan.
  • Digital Filter Function: Two settings ("A" for 50 Hz, "b" for 60 Hz) are available to reject power line interference, ensuring stable temperature readings.
  • Alarm Functions: High limit (AH) and low limit (AL) alarms with LED and buzzer notification alert users to temperature excursions. A step ending alarm (ASt) beeps when each programmed step is completed. Alarms can be muted, except for the step ending alarm.
  • Sensor Installation: The sensor connector features a slot for pin-connect alignment and a spring lock to prevent accidental disconnections.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning: The controller should only be cleaned when it is cool and unplugged.
  • Troubleshooting: In case of abnormal display or noise, users are advised to turn off, unplug, and contact the manufacturer.
  • Factory Reset: A factory reset function is available to restore all parameters, including saved recipes, to their default settings. Users are cautioned to record important settings before performing a reset.
  • Heat Management: The manual provides guidance on managing heat generated by the internal solid-state relay, especially during prolonged full-power operation with high-current heaters. Recommendations include using hot water to reduce initial heat-up time, limiting maximum output power, ensuring proper ventilation, and tilting the instrument. The chassis is made of 3 mm thick aluminum for good heat dissipation.
