Jump-starting
General
If necessary, the eng ine can be sta r ted by connecting it to
the batt ery of another veh icle.
If the eng ine should fa il to start because of a discharged or wea k
batter y, th e batter y can be co nn ect ed to th e batt ery of anoth er
vehic le, using a pair of jumper cables to start the eng ine .
Both batte r ies must be rated at 12 vo lts . The capacity (Ah ) of the
bo oster batte ry mus t not be substa nt ially less tha n the capac ity of
the discha rged battery.
Jumper cables
Use onl y jumpe r cable s of sufficient ly large cross section to safely
carry the star t er cu rrent . Refer to t he manufacturer's specificatio ns.
Use only jumpe r cables which have insulated term inal clam ps and
are prop erly marked for di stincti o n:
plus (+l cable : in most cases colored red
minus(- ) cable : in m ost cases colored black
& WARNING
Batteries contain electricity, acid , and gas. Any of these can cause
very serious or fatal injury . Follow the instructions below for safe
handling of your vehicle 's battery.
• Always shield your eyes and avoid leaning over the battery
whenever possible .
• A discharged battery can already freeze at temperatures just
below 32 °F (0 °C). Before connecting a jumper cable , the frozen
battery must be thawed completely, otherwise it could explode.
• Do not allow battery acid to contact eyes or skin . Flush any
contacted area with water immediately.
&, WARNING (continued )
• Improper use of a booster battery to start a vehicle may cause
an explosion.
• Vehicle batteries generate explosive gases . Keep sparks, flame
and lighted cigarettes away from batteries .
• Do not try to jump start any vehicle with a low acid level in the
battery .
• The voltage of the booster battery must also have a 12-Volt
rating . The capacity (Ahl of the booster battery should not be
lower than that of the discharged battery . Use of batteries of
different voltage or substantially different "Ah " rating may cause
an explosion and personal injury .
• Never charge a frozen battery . Gas trapped in the ice may cause
an explosion.
• Never charge or use a battery that has been frozen. The battery
case may have be weakened .
• Use of batteries of different voltage or substantially different
capacity (Ah l rating may cause an explosion and injury . The
capacity (Ahl of the booster battery should not be lower than that
of the discharged battery.
• Before you check anything in the engine compartment , always
read and heed all WARNINGS ~ page 193, "Working in the engine
compartment " .
0 Note
• Applying a higher vo ltage booster battery will cause expensive
dam age to sensitiv e elect ron ic co mpon ent s, suc h as control unit s,
relays, radio, etc .
• Ther e m ust be no elect rical co ntac t bet ween the vehi cles as
othe rwise current cou ld already start to flow as soon as the posit ive
(+) termin als are conn ect ed .
