Do you have a question about the B&G HS 2000 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The HS 2000 is an electronic navigation system designed to assist in boat navigation, offering a comprehensive suite of functions for both cruising and racing. It is a fully integrated power boat instrumentation system that displays information obtained from various sensors on a choice of displays positioned throughout the boat. The system is designed to be user-friendly, with a menu-driven interface accessible from any Full Function Display (FFD).

Function Description:

The HS 2000 system processes data from various sensors to provide a wide range of navigational and environmental information. Key functions include:

  • Boat Speed/Log: Measures current boat speed and distance traveled. It can be calibrated for accuracy and offers options for automatic, manual, or reference calibration.
  • Depth: Provides accurate depth readings, with adjustable datum settings to reference either the waterline or keel line. It also includes shallow and deep alarm capabilities.
  • Compass Heading: Displays the boat's heading, derived from an electronic fluxgate compass. It supports various compass types (Super Halcyon 3, Halcyon 2000) and allows for deviation correction through a calibration procedure.
  • Sea Temperature: Monitors the current sea temperature, with an offset calibration feature.
  • Navigation Functions: Includes Bearing to Waypoint (Rhumb Line or Great Circle), Bearing Waypoint to Waypoint, Course Over Ground, Dead Reckoning (course and distance), Distance to Waypoint, Next Waypoint Distance, Time to Waypoint, and Tidal Set and Drift.
  • Time: Displays local time of day, requiring an interfaced position fixing system.
  • Trip Functions: Offers Trip Log and Dead Reckoning functions that can be reset and restarted as required.
  • Alarms: Provides high, low, and sector alarms for various functions (e.g., depth, boat speed, heading), with audible and visual warnings.
  • Damping: Allows users to adjust the response of most functions to smooth out readings in rough weather or quicken them in calm conditions.
  • Lighting Control: Manages the illumination level of all system displays, with options for system-wide or local control at individual FFDs.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Power Supply: Designed for use with a 12V DC power supply.
  • Processors: Features a Main Processor Unit that stores all calibration, damping, and alarm settings in battery-backed memory.
  • Sensors: Supports Paddle-Wheel Speed Sensors, XTL Fin Sonic Transducers (for speed, distance, and depth), Super Halcyon 3 Fluxgate Compass, Halcyon 2000 Fluxgate Compass, and Depth Sensors.
  • Displays: Compatible with NMEA Full Function Displays (FFD), Standard Full Function Displays (FFD), and 20/20 Displays. The NMEA FFD includes an NMEA interface for connecting to other sensor devices (e.g., GPS, autopilots, radars).
  • NMEA Compatibility: Supports NMEA 0183 for input and output of various data sentences (e.g., GLL, HDM, MTW, VTG).
  • Network: Units are interconnected via a system network, requiring terminators at each end.
  • Cables: Utilizes screened cables for protection against unwanted emissions.

Usage Features:

  • User-Defined Pages: FFDs allow users to configure up to four custom display pages, each showing two functions, to meet specific needs.
  • Keypad Operation: The system is operated via dedicated keys on the FFDs: On/Off Illumination, Page, Scroll Up/Down, Enter/Reset, Speed/Depth (SPD/DEP), Navigation (NAV), and Temperature (TEMP).
  • Remote Control: Optional remote push-buttons can be used for basic control of associated FFDs, including page selection and fast reset of trip functions.
  • 20/20 Display Configuration: The 20/20 display is fully programmable and can be configured from any FFD or a remote push-button to show a single function with large digits.
  • Halcyon Display: A dedicated electronic compass display providing digital heading information and a bar graph for off-course error, with operating modes for Sail Boat, Cruise Power, and Race Power.
  • Diagnostic Functions: Includes FFD diagnostics (Key Test, Display, Network, RAM, PROM, EPROM, Lighting, Debug, RES-SYS, Versions, Errors, Remote) and Depth Sounder diagnostics to assist in fault finding.

Maintenance Features:

  • Calibration: The system requires accurate calibration of boat speed, compass heading, depth, and sea temperature for reliable data. Calibration procedures are detailed in the manual, including automatic, manual, and reference methods for log calibration, and specific procedures for compass and temperature offset calibration.
  • Sensor Cleaning: The Paddle-Wheel Speed Sensor housing is designed with a flap valve for easy withdrawal and cleaning of the paddle-wheel.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides extensive diagnostic information and troubleshooting guides for common issues, such as depth sounder problems (boat stationary, boat moving, consistently shallow depth, random deep depths) and error messages (e.g., Er01, Er02, CAL, NO SPACE).
  • Software Updates: The PROM diagnostic function displays the software version number, which can be useful for support and updates.
  • Record Keeping: It is crucial to keep a full record of the calibration process for future reference.
