Why does my BRADEN Industrial Electrical winch run hot?

  If your BRADEN Industrial Electrical winch is running hot, it could be due to several factors. It might be mounted on an uneven or flexible surface, causing distortion and binding of the gear train. Ensure the mounting surface is reinforced and level the winch with shims if needed. Also, ensure that the hydraulic system temperature is not more than 180 degrees F, thoroughly clean the exterior and flush the interior. Excessively worn or damaged internal winch parts can also cause overheating. Disassemble the winch to inspect and replace any worn parts.

  If the brake on your BRADEN Industrial Electrical winch won't hold a load with the control lever in neutral, excessive system back pressure acting on the brake release port could be the issue. Inspect the hydraulic system for a restriction in the return line from the control valve to the reservoir, and ensure the control valve and plumbing are properly sized to the winch motor. Also, worn or damaged brake discs can cause the brake to fail. Disassemble the brake to inspect the brake discs. Lastly, brake clutch slippage can also cause the issue. Drain the old gear oil and flush the winch with solvent, then thoroughly drain the solvent and refill the winch with the recommended planetary gear oil. The brake clutch itself may be damaged or worn, requiring disassembly and inspection.

Inspect the hydraulic system for a restriction in the return line from the control valve to the reservoir, and ensure the control valve and plumbing are properly sized to winch motor. Finally, the controls might be operated too quickly, so conduct operator training as required.

Install an accurate 0-4000 psi gauge into the inlet port of the brake valve to check the relief pressure.

  If your BRADEN Industrial Electrical winch isn't lowering the load smoothly, there could be a few reasons. First, a plugged or loose pilot orifice could be the cause. Try removing the pilot hose and fitting from the brake valve, then use a 5/32 inch Allen wrench to remove the pilot orifice. Ensure you clean and install the pilot orifice tightly in the brake valve. Alternatively, the friction brake may not be releasing due to a defective brake cylinder seal. In this case, disconnect the swivel tee from the brake release port and connect a hand pump with an accurate 0-2000 psi gauge and shut-off valve to the –4 J.I.C. fitting in the brake release port.   If the wire rope on your BRADEN Industrial Electrical winch isn't spooling smoothly, several factors could be at play. The winch may be mounted too close to the main sheave, causing the fleet angle to exceed 1-1/2 degrees. Check the mounting distance and fleet angle, and reposition the winch as needed. Similarly, if the winch isn't mounted perpendicular to an imaginary line between the cable drum's center and the first sheave, it can cause spooling issues.
