What to do if the BRADEN CH280 brake won't hold a load in neutral?
    • D
      Deanna OlsonAug 5, 2025
If the brake isn't holding a load with the control lever in neutral, excessive system back pressure acting on the brake release port may be the cause. The solution is the same as Remedy 2 of Trouble B2. Also, worn or damaged brake discs may be the reason. You should follow Remedy 3 of Trouble A3. Slipping of the brake clutch could also be the reason. In that case, drain the old gear oil and flush the hoist with solvent, then thoroughly drain the solvent and refill the hoist with the recommended planetary gear oil. The brake clutch itself may also be damaged or worn, requiring disassembly and inspection.

How to fix a BRADEN Winches hoist that won't raise the rated load?
    • J
      Janet SantiagoAug 9, 2025
If the hoist won't raise the rated load, it might be mounted on an uneven or flexible surface, causing distortion and binding. Reinforce the mounting surface and use shims to level the hoist. First loosen, then evenly retighten all hoist mounting bolts to the recommended torque. Alternatively, the system relief valve might be set too low. Check the relief pressure by installing an accurate 0–4,000 PSI gauge into the inlet port of the brake valve.

Why is my BRADEN Winches hoist not raising the rated load?
    • B
      Bradley MillerAug 13, 2025
Several factors can cause a hoist to fail to raise the rated load. Be certain the hydraulic system temperature is not more than 180°F (82°C). Excessive hydraulic oil temperatures increase motor internal leakage and reduce motor performance. Follow the same remedies for Trouble D1 and D2. The hoist line pull rating is based on the first layer of wire rope. Follow the same remedies for Trouble E2. Inefficient rigging and sheaves may also be the cause. Refer to hoist performance charts for additional information. Perform rigging service as recommended by the crane manufacturer.

What causes a BRADEN Winches hoist to chatter when raising a load?
    • G
      gonzalesdanielleAug 18, 2025
Chattering during lifting can be caused by the same issues as D2, so apply the remedies for Trouble D2. It could also be due to low hydraulic oil flow to the motor, so apply the remedies for Trouble E2. Also, the controls may be operated too quickly. If so, conduct operator training as required.

How to make wire rope spool smoothly on a BRADEN Winches drum?
    • D
      Dawn DiazAug 22, 2025
If the wire rope doesn't spool smoothly, the hoist might be too close to the main sheave, causing a fleet angle greater than 1.5 degrees. Check the mounting distance and fleet angle, and reposition the hoist if needed. It's also possible the hoist isn't mounted perpendicular to an imaginary line between the drum center and the first sheave. You could also be using the wrong lay rope. Replace the wire rope and conduct operator/rigger training as required. Finally, the hoist may have been overloaded, causing permanent set in the wire rope.

Why is my BRADEN CH280 leaking oil from the vent plug?
    • T
      thomas63Aug 27, 2025
System back pressure must not exceed 150 PSI. Inspect the hydraulic system for a restriction in the return line from the control valve to the reservoir. Ensure the control valve and plumbing are properly sized to the hoist motor. Oil analysis may indicate contamination has worn the motor shaft and seal. Thoroughly flush the entire hydraulic system and install new filters and oil. Install a new motor seal.

Why won't my BRADEN Winches hoist lower smoothly?
    • J
      Jerry SchmittOct 31, 2025
The hoist may not lower smoothly due to a plugged or loose pilot orifice. Try removing the pilot hose and fitting from the brake valve, then use a 5/32-inch Allen wrench to remove the pilot orifice. Ensure you clean and tightly reinstall the pilot orifice in the brake valve. Alternatively, a defective brake cylinder seal could be the cause. To check this, disconnect the swivel tee from the brake release port, connect a hand pump with an accurate 0–2,000 PSI gauge and shut-off valve to the –4 JIC fitting in the brake release port, apply 1,000 PSI to the brake, close the shut-off valve, and let it stand for five minutes. If there is any pressure loss, the brake cylinder should be inspected and the seals replaced. Damaged brake discs can also prevent smooth lowering. In that case, disassemble...
