9.9 - Setting Clearances
With gear movement restricted:
1. Torque the nut on the right hand timing gear
to (For B27X, B28X, & B29X) 15-20 ft/lbs. For
B30X thru B38X 45-50 ft/lbs
2. Loosen the nut on the left hand timing gear.
3. Place a
0.005” shim for B27X, B28X, B29X,
0.008” shim for B30X, B31X, B32X
0.016” shim for B38X
0.015” shim for B33X, B34X
0.015” shim for B35X, B36X
in front of, and behind, the tooth of the left
hand rotor. Once the shims are in place, and
with the rotor movement still restricted, torque
the nut on the left hand timing gear to
15-20 ft/lbs for B27X, B28X, & B29X or
45-50 ft/lbs for B30X thru B38X.
4. Remove the shims and folded rag and check for
correct clearance by slowly rotating the rotors.
Listen for sounds of binding, rotors should turn
freely and not make contact at any point.
5. If the rotors bind, or make noise, repeat this
procedure. This time loosening the right hand
rotor instead of the left.
6. Once clearances are set use a small flat head
screw driver to bend up one tab on each of the
timing gear lock washers to secure the location
of the nut.
