Aligning Your Phone to Your Telescope
In just a few minutes, you’ll be able to locate all the best objects in the night sky with the help of your StarSense
Explorer telescope and smartphone. This tutorial walks you through setting up StarSense Explorer and using the app
to navigate the sky.
First, you’ll need to set up your phone and StarSense Explorer. We recommend practicing these next few steps
during the day.
To begin, set up your telescope according to the instructions in the Quick Setup Guide that came in the box.

Aligning Your Phone to Your Telescope

Insert Low-Powered Eyepiece

Insert the low-powered eyepiece into the telescope.

Place Phone in Dock

Place your smartphone securely into the StarSense Dock.

Center Phone Camera in Dock

Center your phone's camera view in the dock's mirror using the adjustment knobs.

Align Phone View with Telescope

Align phone view with telescope view by pointing at a distant object at least a quarter-mile away.

Center Object in Eyepiece

Center the distant object precisely within the telescope's eyepiece.

Center Object in Camera View

Adjust the phone's camera view until the object is centered in the app's crosshairs.

Using the StarSense Explorer App

Initiate Telescope Alignment

Tap the StarSense icon to check or initiate telescope alignment in the app.

Select Celestial Object

Select a celestial object from the planetarium view to target it.

View Tonight's Best Objects

Use the Star icon to find and select 'Tonight's Best' objects for observation.

Identify Selected Object

The selected object's name is displayed at the bottom of the planetarium screen.

Understand Bullseye Indicator

The bullseye icon shows the current pointing direction of the telescope.

Move Telescope to Target

Use slow-motion controls and on-screen arrows to guide the telescope to the target.

Wait for Star Sensing

Stop and wait for the telescope to sense stars as you approach the target.

Adjust for Bullseye Color

If the bullseye is yellow, continue aligning with the arrows until the target is centered.

Confirm Object Location

A green bullseye indicates successful object location, ready for viewing.
