Overview

This document provides comprehensive installation instructions and general information for a Dometic roof-top air conditioner/heat pump unit, designed for recreational vehicles (RVs). The unit is intended for OEM installation, meaning it is typically installed during the RV manufacturing process.

Function Description

The Dometic roof-top unit serves as a climate control system for RVs, offering both cooling (air conditioning) and heating (heat pump or electric heat, depending on the model) functionalities. It is designed to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature within the RV, regardless of external weather conditions. The system operates by drawing in return air from the RV interior, processing it (cooling or heating), and then distributing conditioned air back into the living space through a ducted system. Some models also include an electric heat strip for additional heating capabilities, while heat pump models provide reverse-cycle heating. The unit is controlled by a Comfort Control Center 2 (CCC 2) thermostat, which allows users to select modes, set desired temperatures, and manage multiple zones if the RV has more than one unit installed. An optional indoor temperature sensor can be integrated to provide more accurate temperature readings for the thermostat, allowing for more precise climate control. The system also supports integration with an Energy Management System (EMS) for load shedding and an Automatic Generator Start (AGS) kit for automated power management.

Usage Features

The Dometic roof-top unit is designed for user-friendly operation through the CCC 2 thermostat. The thermostat provides intuitive controls for various functions:

  • Mode Selection: Users can choose between cooling, heating (heat pump or electric heat), and fan-only modes.
  • Temperature Setting: The desired temperature can be easily set to ensure optimal comfort.
  • Fan Speed Control: The fan speed can be adjusted to suit user preferences and optimize air circulation.
  • Zone Control: For RVs with multiple units, the CCC 2 thermostat allows for independent control of different zones, enabling customized climate settings for various areas within the vehicle.
  • Temperature Differential Setting: The system can be configured to operate with an ON/OFF temperature differential of either 1 or 2 degrees Fahrenheit, allowing users to fine-tune the system's responsiveness to temperature changes.
  • Optional Indoor Temperature Sensor: When an optional indoor temperature sensor is installed, the thermostat can be mounted in a convenient location, as the sensor provides the primary temperature reading, ensuring more accurate and consistent climate control throughout the RV.
  • Energy Management System (EMS) Integration: The unit can interface with an EMS to manage power consumption, potentially shedding the compressor load when other high-demand appliances are in use, thus preventing circuit overloads.
  • Automatic Generator Start (AGS) Integration: For RVs equipped with an AGS kit, the unit can communicate with the AGS to automatically start the generator when shore power is unavailable or when the battery charge drops below a certain level, ensuring continuous operation of the climate control system.

Maintenance Features

Maintenance of the Dometic roof-top unit primarily involves ensuring proper airflow and cleanliness to maintain optimal performance and prevent issues. Key maintenance aspects include:

  • Air Filter Maintenance: The return air openings include a filter designed to prevent dirt accumulation on the unit's cooling surface. Regular inspection and cleaning of this filter are crucial. A dirty filter can restrict airflow, reduce cooling/heating efficiency, and potentially lead to frost formation on the cooling coil.
  • Condensation Management: The unit is designed to remove moisture from the air during operation. To prevent condensation from forming on interior surfaces, it is important to keep doors and windows closed when the air conditioner is running.
  • Frost Formation Prevention: While some frost on the cooling coil is normal, excessive icing can occur under certain conditions, especially when outside temperatures are low. If frost persists, users should inspect and clean the air filter and ensure all air vents are open and unobstructed. Operating the unit in fan-only mode can help defrost the coil. If frosting continues, professional service may be required.
  • Ductwork Integrity: The air distribution ductwork must be properly insulated and sealed to prevent condensation on adjacent surfaces and maintain system efficiency. Any damage or collapse of the ductwork should be addressed promptly to avoid performance issues and potential leaks.
  • Gasket Inspection: The roof gasket, which seals the unit to the RV roof, is critical for preventing water leaks. During installation, the gasket must be compressed evenly to approximately 1/2 inch. Regular checks for wear or damage to the gasket are recommended to ensure a watertight seal.
  • System Reset and Checkout: After any configuration changes or if the system is not functioning correctly, a system reset can be performed via the CCC 2 thermostat. This allows for verification of all installed features and ensures the unit recognizes updated settings. If issues persist after a reset, checking wiring and dip switch settings is advised, and professional service may be necessary.
  • Professional Servicing: For any complex issues, modifications, or repairs, it is strongly recommended that the unit be installed and serviced by a qualified service technician to ensure safety and proper operation. Unauthorized modifications or improper servicing can be hazardous and may void warranties.
