The Eaton Bussmann series PV Combiner box is a robust and versatile solution designed for photovoltaic (PV) systems, integrating various functionalities to ensure efficient and safe operation. It is engineered to meet the requirements of IEC 61439-1 and 2, as well as international safety standards.
The primary function of the PV Combiner box is to aggregate the DC current from multiple PV strings into a single output, which is then fed to an inverter. This consolidation simplifies wiring and reduces the number of connections to the inverter. The box is available in various configurations to accommodate different module and inverter combinations, making it highly flexible for diverse PV installations. Key integrated features include PV Surge Protection Devices (SPDs) for safeguarding against overvoltage, and options for internal power supplies (240Vac/24Vdc or PV 1000/24Vdc) for monitored units. For enhanced communication, optional SPDs for 2-wire Modbus RS485 communication are also available. The box incorporates 1000Vdc PV switches and modular fuse holders (10x38mm indicating or 14x51mm non-indicating) with gPV fuses (1-20A or 25-32A) to provide essential circuit protection.
The combiner box is designed for ease of installation and connection. It supports both MC4 connectors and IP65 rated cable glands for input and output cabling, offering flexibility based on installation preferences. The enclosure itself is available in IP65 rated fibre-glass reinforced polyester (GRP), powder-coated galvanised steel, or stainless steel, ensuring durability and protection against environmental elements. Internally, the components are "touch safe" to IP20, enhancing safety during inspection.
For monitored units, the box includes optional string monitoring capabilities, allowing for real-time performance tracking of individual PV strings. An internal temperature probe is also present in monitored units to monitor the internal environment. Communication for monitored units is facilitated via an optional Modbus RS485 service port, and some models offer wireless communication options (Zigbee or industrial wireless) for remote data access without additional wiring.
A critical safety feature is the external interlock switch handle, which ensures that the enclosure cannot be opened while the system is energized. The handle has clear "ON" and "OFF" positions, and an interlocking system prevents access to live internal components when the switch is in the "ON" position. This interlock can be overridden for specific maintenance scenarios, but this should only be done by qualified personnel and with full awareness of the associated risks. The box also includes a lockout/tagout feature for secure isolation during maintenance.
Maintaining the IP rating of the combiner box is crucial for its longevity and safe operation. Users are advised not to tamper with or change any seals, glands, or connectors, as this could compromise the IP65 rating. Regular checks and maintenance of IP55 rated vents and air filters are recommended to ensure correct IP rating and airflow, especially depending on the environmental conditions of the installation.
For service and maintenance, strict safety procedures must be followed. All work should only be carried out by electrically skilled personnel, adhering to local laws and regulations. Before any work, the combiner box switch disconnector must be in the "OFF" position, and the box must be safely isolated from any system load. It is emphasized that even when disconnected from load, 1000VDC potential may still be present during daylight hours. Appropriate and calibrated test equipment must be used to confirm zero current and full isolation before opening fuse holders. All safety covers must remain in place, and only after all maintenance is complete and the box is re-isolated should fuse holders be closed and the system re-energized.
The design allows for easy replacement of key components such as fuses and SPD modules. Blown PV fuses should be replaced with Eaton Bussmann series PV Fuse links of the same rating and system voltage. Similarly, SPD modules, which protect against overvoltage, are designed for easy replacement, with specific part numbers provided for different types of SPDs. Other service items like IP68 rated glands, IP66 rated breather drains, IP65 rated covers for external communication ports, and combiner box keys are also available for replacement to ensure continuous optimal performance and safety.
