CARTRIDGE SERVICE

Overview

The ELGA Boost Pump, model B114, is a water purification device designed for laboratory or domestic use, providing purified water through an ion exchange process. It is intended to be connected to a cold potable water supply and positioned over a sink or drain for convenient operation.

Function Description

The primary function of the ELGA Boost Pump is to produce purified water. It utilizes four C114 Ion Exchange Cartridges to remove impurities from the incoming water supply. The device incorporates a purity meter with a conductivity cell to monitor water quality. Users can test the water purity by pressing a dedicated "water test" switch, and the meter needle will indicate whether the water is of acceptable quality (green zone) or if the cartridge is exhausted (red zone). A "meter test" switch is also provided to check the battery status. The unit is designed for free-flowing operation, meaning the outlet should not be restricted in any way.

Usage Features

The ELGA Boost Pump is designed for straightforward installation and operation. It should be securely fastened to a wall, preferably about 5 feet (150 cm) above floor level, using the provided fixing screws. The inlet tube connects to a standard ½" (12 mm) cold water tap via a tap connector.

During initial setup, users must carefully remove transit caps from the filter cartridges, ensuring the internal foam filters are not disturbed. The cartridges are then screwed into place, and the inlet cap with tubing is attached. A 9V PP3 battery (not included) powers the purity meter and needs to be installed by connecting it to a red plug underneath the chassis and pushing it into the battery housing.

Once installed, the device is ready for use. To operate, the user first presses the "meter test" switch to ensure the battery is functional. Then, the cold water tap is turned on. There will be a brief delay as the Elgacan cartridge fills with water before a steady flow from the outlet pipe begins. It is recommended to discard the first half-litre of water. After this, the "water test" switch can be pressed to instantly observe the water purity reading on the meter. The meter needle's immediate position indicates the water purity; holding the switch down for too long may result in a false reading.

The device clearly indicates water quality: a green zone reading signifies acceptable quality, while a red zone indicates that the Elgacan cartridge is exhausted and requires replacement. If the unit has not been used for some time, the water quality may temporarily decrease but should recover almost immediately upon drawing water. If it does not recover, the cartridge is exhausted.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for the optimal performance and longevity of the ELGA Boost Pump. The primary maintenance task involves changing the ion exchange cartridges and cleaning the conductivity cell electrodes.

To change a cartridge, the water supply must first be turned off, and the tap connector removed from the water supply. The inlet cap with tubing is unscrewed from the Elgacan cartridge, and the old cartridge is then unscrewed and discarded. The battery should also be disconnected during this process.

A key maintenance step is to remove and clean the filter washer (D) by flushing it with tap water. The conductivity cell electrodes (S), visible inside the threaded coupling (E), also require cleaning. This should be done using a pipe cleaner and water, paying particular attention to the inside surfaces of the electrodes. This meticulous cleaning is essential to prevent false meter readings, which could lead to unnecessary cartridge replacements.

After cleaning, a fresh Elgacan cartridge is fitted, the filter washer is replaced, and the inlet cap with tubing is reconnected. Finally, the tap connector is pushed back onto the cold water tap, and the battery is reconnected. The unit is then ready for operation.

It is explicitly stated that users should "DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REMOVE ELECTRODES" other than for cleaning as described. The device is designed for free-flowing operation, and the outlet should never be restricted. Failure to observe this warning could lead to damage to the equipment. Similarly, warnings are given regarding the importance of observing instructions to prevent injury or death.

Elgacan C114 cartridges are available in standard packs (four Elgacans per pack) from local Elga Agents or directly from The Elga Group, ensuring easy access to replacement parts.
