6.1 Inspection,Testing,andMaintenanceRecommendations
6.1.1 NFPA72,Chapter14recommendations
NFPA 72, section 14.4.3.3 dictates that video image smoke and flame detectors shall be inspected, tested, and
maintained in accordance with the manufacturers published instructions. Fike Video Analytics Corporation, as the
manufacturerof the FVA‐IPvideoimage flame and smokedetector,has detailed theseproceduresto aid endusers,
AHJs,andFikeVideoAnalyticsdistributorsinestablishinganinspection,testingandmaintenanceprogram.Itisinthe
interestofallpartiestoensurethatafunctionalsystemisprovidedandmaintained.
6.1.2 Inspections
Inspectionsshouldbedoneonasemi‐annualbasis(twiceayear);however,camera(s)andassociatedequipmentthat
are inaccessible for safety considerations (e.g. continuous process operations, energized electrical equipment,
radiation, and excessiveheight) shall be inspected during scheduled shutdowns ifapprovedby the authority having
jurisdiction.Theseextendedintervalsshallnotexceed18months.Theinspectionshouldensurenoobstructionsare
betweenthe detector and protected area, that lenses are clear,andfreeofcontaminants,thatthecamerasdonot
havemechanicaldamage,andthattheunitisdirectedtowardtheintendedhazard.
Obstructionswithin10ft.(3m)ofthecamerathatobstructthelineofsitetothehazardareaaretoberemovedorthe
cameralocationistobeadjustedtoensurethatthehazardareaiscovered.
Thevideofeedsatthesecuritystation(FikeVMSsoftware)canbecheckedforclaritytoensurethatabuildupofdust,
greaseorotherdebrishasnotobscuredthelens.ReferenceimagesproducedfromtheFikeVMSsoftwarereport(see
VMSmanual)canbeusedasareference.
Avisualinspectionofthecamerashouldbemadetoidentifymechanicaldamage.LED’sonthefrontandrearpanel
indicatecamerastateofalarm,processingandcommunication.
The cameras field ofview(FOV) should bechecked to ensure thatitmatchestheFikevideomanagementsoftware
Auditreportandthatthecamerashavenotbeenmovedormissaligned.
6.1.3 Testing
Testing should bedone on anannual basis; however, camera(s) and associatedequipment that areinaccessible for
safety considerations (e.g. continuous process operations, energized electrical equipment, radiation, and excessive
height)shallbetestedduringscheduledshutdownsifapprovedbytheauthorityhavingjurisdiction.Theseextended
intervals shall not exceed 18 months. Testing can be broken down into two sections; functional and operational
conformance.TestsareperformedbyFikeVideoAnalyticsCorporationaspartoftheQualityControl(QC)process.All
FVA‐IPcamerasundergoextensivetestingbeforebeingshippedtoacustomeraspartofFactoryMutual(FM)approval
conformance.Thesetestsincludelivefiretests,communicationtests,andaburninofthecameras.
Cameraslocatedonsitecanbequicklyvisuallyinspectedforoperationalconformance.Thisisdonebyobservingthe
userinterfacevideostreamandthefrontfaceplateofthecamera.Ifanimageispresentandtheoverlaytextadded
by the software is updating (time and frame rate will progress and fluctuate respectively) then the cameras are
functioningandtheyhavetheabilitytodetectattheprescribedsensitivitylevels.
