How to Test Continuity
Caution
To avoid possible damage to the meter or to
the equipment under test, disconnect circuit
power and discharge all high voltage capaci-
tors before measuring resistance, testing for
continuity or diode test.
A continuity test verifies that you have a closed circuit.
The meter detects opens or shorts lasting as little as 1 ms.
This is valuable when troubleshooting intermittents asso-
ciated with cables, connectors, switches, relays, etc.
To check continuity:
1. Turn off power to the circuit.
2. Insert the test leads into the
w and COM jacks.
3. Turn the rotary switch to
w
.
4. Press R for 2 seconds.
The meter toggles to the continuity test function, and
w is displayed.
5. Touch the probes to the circuit.
Continuity exists if resistance is less than about 30
ohms, and the beeper emits a continuous tone.
Figure 8 shows how to use the continuity test to check a
stoplight switch.
