Overview

The GrowSpan™ Series 2000 Steel End Frame Kit is designed to provide a robust and reliable end frame for greenhouse structures. This manual details the assembly, usage, and maintenance of the end frame, which is available in two configurations: with base plates (GK2EW24120B) for anchoring to concrete slabs or piers, and without base plates (GK2EW24120G) for setting vertical supports below grade in concrete. The end frame is specifically designed for 24' wide structures.

Function Description

The primary function of the GrowSpan™ Series 2000 Steel End Frame Kit is to provide structural support for the ends of a greenhouse. It integrates with the main frame of the building and serves as the framework for end wall cladding, including options for pedestrian doors and guillotine vents. The kit ensures the stability and integrity of the greenhouse structure against environmental factors.

Important Technical Specifications

The end frame is constructed from steel components, ensuring durability and strength.

  • Endwall Columns:
    • C1: PG2X2EC14L13800 (2" x 2" 14 GA 1-PLY SQUARE TUBE) – Used in base plate options.
    • C2: PG2X2EC14L16200 (2" x 2" 14 GA 1-PLY SQUARE TUBE) – Used in base plate options.
    • C1: PG2X2EC14L16200 (2" x 2" 14 GA 1-PLY SQUARE TUBE) – Used in ground post options.
    • C2: PG2X2EC14L18750 (2" x 2" 14 GA 1-PLY SQUARE TUBE) – Used in ground post options.
  • Girt/Door Frame: GRT2X2G16L144 (16 GA PROFILE)
  • Column Top Connection Plate: PGBRKAAS01 (CONNECTION PLATE)
  • Column Bottom Base Plate (for base plate option): 111817 (BASE PLATE)
  • Column Bottom Ground Post Insert (for ground post option): 112357 (GROUND POST INSERT)
  • Lateral Bracing Bracket: QH1070 (PIPE STRAP)
  • Door Frame Components (optional):
    • H1: 105488072 (2" C-CHANNEL)
    • J1: 105488120 (2" C-CHANNEL)
    • DB: QH1330 (FRAME BRACKET)
  • Dimensions: The end frame is designed for a 24' wide structure. Key dimensions include:
    • Column spacing: 3'-5", 4'-2", 8'-10", 4'-2", 3'-5" (center to center).
    • Vertical girt spacing: 4'-0" (center to center).
    • Top of post height: 2'-7" (from top girt to top of post).
    • Ground Post Option (G) requires a 2'-0" embedment for vertical supports.
  • Fasteners: The assembly utilizes #14 x 1" TEK screws, 1/2" x 3-1/2" hex bolts (A325), 1/2" washers, 1/2" nuts, #10 x 3/4" wafer head screws, and 1 3/4" Tapcon screws (FA7150) for various connections.
  • Material: Steel for frame components. Aluminum angle or square tubing (XR2535 or 113301) is used for panel installation at the base, secured with sealant (112263) and concrete fasteners.

Usage Features

The GrowSpan™ Series 2000 Steel End Frame Kit offers flexibility in installation and customization:

  • Two Installation Options:
    • (B) Base Plate Option: Vertical supports include base plates that are anchored to a concrete slab or concrete piers. This option is suitable for structures built on existing concrete foundations or where a solid, above-grade anchor is preferred.
    • (G) Without Base Plate (Ground Post) Option: Vertical supports are set below grade and anchored in place using customer-supplied concrete. This option is ideal for installations directly into the ground, providing a strong, embedded foundation.
  • Door Opening Integration: The kit includes materials to frame an opening for a pedestrian door. C-channel material is used for this purpose. Users are advised to confirm rough opening dimensions with the door's documentation and by measuring the actual door before anchoring any framing in concrete.
  • Ventilation Integration: The manual highlights the option to install a guillotine vent in the end wall. Users are instructed to consult the vent kit's instructions for specific dimensions and installation requirements, as they may differ from the general end frame diagrams.
  • Cladding Compatibility: The end frame is designed to accommodate end wall cladding kits (additional purchase required). The manual advises against installing cladding on windy or stormy days.
  • Aluminum Angle/Tube Installation: For base plate options, aluminum angle (XR2535) or square tubing (113301) can be installed at the bottom run of the girt to prevent leaks and secure PC panels. This material should be field-cut to fit and sealed with polyurethane sealant (112263) before being secured to concrete with appropriate fasteners.

Maintenance Features

Proper care and maintenance are crucial for the longevity and reliable service of the GrowSpan™ Series 2000 Steel End Frame Kit. The manual outlines several key maintenance practices:

  • Regular Inspections: All components should be inspected regularly and frequently to identify any signs of wear, damage, or loosening.
  • Fastener Checks: Connections and fasteners must be checked periodically to ensure they remain tight and in good repair. Loose fasteners should be tightened promptly.
  • Debris Removal: Any debris or objects that accumulate on the shelter or end frame should be removed. Care must be taken to use tools that will not damage the cover (if equipped) during debris removal.
  • Snow Removal: In regions with snowfall, excess snow accumulation on the cover and along the sides and end panels must be removed to prevent structural stress. Tools used for snow removal should not damage the cover. It is important to remove snow from the cover and surrounding areas after each snowfall.
  • Part Replacement: Worn or damaged parts should be replaced promptly to maintain the structural integrity and safety of the end frame.
  • Safety Precautions: Users are reminded of several safety precautions, including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (eye, hand, head protection), using a portable GFCI with power tools, avoiding climbing on the framing, not occupying the shelter during severe weather, ensuring adequate ventilation, and not storing hazardous materials inside.

The manual emphasizes the importance of reading all instructions before beginning assembly and consulting with a qualified, professional contractor if unfamiliar with constructing similar frame structures. Temporary bracing, shoring, and support are the responsibility of the individuals assembling the end frame.
