Overview

The Hilti DD 130 is an electrically powered diamond core drilling machine designed for both hand-held use and mounting on a drill stand, suitable for wet or dry core drilling. It is intended for professional use in drilling through holes and blind holes in mineral materials.

Function Description

The DD 130 operates by rotating a diamond core bit to cut through various mineral materials. It features a motor, gearing section, and chuck to hold the core bit. The machine incorporates a water swivel/extraction head, which is crucial for both wet drilling (supplying water to cool the bit and flush debris) and dry drilling (connecting to a dust extraction system). A water flow indicator on the side handle allows the operator to monitor the water volume during wet drilling. For precise control, the machine includes a gear selector to adjust drilling speed, an overload indicator to prevent damage from excessive pressure, and a level indicator for accurate positioning.

When used hand-held, the DD 130 requires the side handle to be fitted and securely tightened, allowing the operator to maintain control with both hands. For increased stability and precision, especially with larger core bits or in specific drilling directions, the machine can be mounted on a drill stand. The drill stand provides a robust frame, columns, carriage, and a hand wheel for controlled advance of the drilling machine. It can be secured using an anchor, a vacuum pad, or a quick-release brace, depending on the application and work surface.

The machine’s electrical safety features include a PRCD (ground fault interrupter) on the supply cord, which must be tested before each use to ensure proper function and prevent electric shock. The DD 130 is designed to be used with a water collection system, particularly for wet drilling, to manage drilling slurry and prevent soiling of the surrounding area. For overhead wet drilling, connecting a wet-type vacuum cleaner to the water collection system is mandatory.

Usage Features

The DD 130 offers versatile usage across different drilling scenarios:

  • Hand-held dry drilling: With dust extraction, it can handle core bits from 12-162 mm in diameter in all directions.
  • Hand-held wet drilling: Without a water collection system, it's suitable for 12–62 mm diameter bits (not upwards). With a water collection system, it can handle 12-62 mm bits in all directions.
  • Drill stand wet drilling: Without a water collection system, it supports 12–152 mm diameter bits (not upwards). With a water collection system, it can be used with 12-132 mm diameter bits in all directions.

Before operation, the side handle can be screwed onto the tool and adjusted to different positions (in 15° increments) for left-handed use or optimal ergonomics. The extraction head/water swivel can also be adjusted and secured by pressing out the water swivel lock and tightening the locking ring.

Fitting the diamond core bit involves opening the chuck by turning it counter-clockwise, inserting the bit, pushing it in until it engages, and then closing the chuck by turning it clockwise. It's crucial to ensure the bit is securely seated. The drilling speed is selected using the gear selector, which should only be operated when the tool is not running.

For dry drilling, the cover from the water swivel/extraction head is unscrewed, and an extraction hose is inserted. The water valve in the side handle must be closed. For hand-held wet drilling, the water valve is opened to allow water flow, and the water supply hose is connected. When starting a hole hand-held, the tool should be held at a slight angle to the work surface, then brought to a 90° position once the hole is started.

When using the drill stand, the machine is mounted by fitting the tool interface plate onto the mounting pins and swinging the tool towards the stand until it engages. The hand wheel is then fitted onto the axle for controlled drilling advance. The drill stand’s drilling angle can be adjusted in 7.5° increments up to a maximum of 45° by slackening adjusting levers, positioning the columns, and re-engaging the locating lugs.

Securing the drill stand is critical for safe operation. With an anchor, the anchor is placed 200 mm from the hole center, the quick-release spindle is screwed in, and the drill stand is aligned using the hole center indicator. Levelling screws are used to level the baseplate, and locknuts are tightened to prevent movement. For vacuum pad attachment, the levelling screws are unscrewed, the vacuum pump hose is connected, and the pump is switched on. The baseplate is then positioned while pressing the vacuum release valve, ensuring the pressure gauge pointer remains in the green area. For quick-release brace attachment, the brace is positioned in the inner oval of the baseplate, and slight pressure is applied to secure it.

Maintenance Features

Regular care and maintenance are essential for the DD 130's longevity and safe operation.

  • Core Bits: Core bits should be cleaned of dirt and protected from corrosion by rubbing them with an oily cloth. The connection end must be kept clean and slightly greased.
  • Tool: The tool should be disconnected from the mains supply before any maintenance. Ventilation slots must be kept clear of blockages and cleaned with a dry brush. Foreign objects should not enter the tool's interior. The outside surfaces are to be cleaned with a damp cloth. Spray, steam cleaning equipment, or running water should not be used for cleaning, as this can affect electrical safety. Grip surfaces must be kept free of oil and grease. The chuck and clamping segments should be cleaned with a cloth and lubricated with Hilti lubricant spray. The filter in the water intake at the side handle should be removed and rinsed periodically. If the water flow indicator becomes dirty, its parts should be removed and cleaned without abrasive agents or sharp objects.
  • General Maintenance: All external parts and operating controls should be checked regularly for damage or faultless function. Any damaged parts or controls that do not function correctly require repair by a Hilti service center. Electrical repairs must be carried out by trained electrical specialists only.
  • Drill Stand: The chain guides must be kept clean and free from drilling slurry, and the chain should always be protected by a film of grease.
  • Adjusting Movement: The drill stand's movement should be easy but without play. This can be adjusted using four screws (two at the top and two at the bottom). To stiffen the movement, release the lower screw, tighten the upper screw, then tighten the lower screw. To ease the movement, release the upper screw, then tighten the lower screw.
  • Adjusting Chain Tension: The chain tension can be adjusted using two screws (marked with a chain symbol on the cover). Turning clockwise increases tension, while turning counter-clockwise decreases tension. Both chains must be tensioned equally.

By following these usage and maintenance guidelines, operators can ensure the DD 130 performs efficiently and safely, extending its operational lifespan.
