Overview

The Hilti TE-22 is a rotary hammer designed for drilling and hammering applications, featuring a 3-wire grounded construction for enhanced safety. It is a robust tool suitable for professional use, offering both hammer drilling and rotary-only drilling modes.

Function Description

The primary function of the Hilti TE-22 is to efficiently drill holes in various materials, particularly concrete, using its rotary hammer action. It can also be used for rotary-only drilling in materials where hammering is not required. The tool is designed to work with specific Hilti TE-C and TE-D drill bits, ranging from 1/4" to 1" in diameter and up to 18" in length. Additionally, it can be used with TE-D-SD setting tools for installing HDI anchors, which come in 1/4" to 1/2" sizes.

The TE-22 operates by combining a rotary motion with a hammering action, which allows it to penetrate hard materials quickly. The hammering mechanism delivers rapid blows to the drill bit, while the rotation clears debris from the hole. For rotary-only drilling, the hammering action can be disengaged, making it suitable for drilling into wood, metal, or other softer materials without the impact.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Current: 5.5 Amps
  • Voltage: 115 Volts AC

    • Length without bit: 15¾"
    • Height: 8⅝"
  • Weight: 12½ lbs.
  • Cord Length: 10 ft.
  • Chuck Type: Hilti chuck, designed for quick and secure bit changes.
  • Recommended Extension Cords (American Wire Gauges for TE-22):
    • Up to 100 ft.: 16 AWG
    • Up to 150 ft.: 14 AWG
    • Up to 250 ft.: 12 AWG
    • Up to 375 ft.: 10 AWG

Usage Features

  • Three-wire Grounded Cord and Plug: Ensures electrical safety by providing a ground path, protecting the operator from electric shock.
  • Automatic Cut-out Brushes: Designed to protect the motor from damage by automatically cutting off power when brushes are worn.
  • Side Handle: Adjustable and locks securely in position by tightening a hand grip, providing better control and comfort during operation.
  • Depth Gauge: Readily adjustable and locks positively, allowing for precise control over drilling depth. It's important to ensure the drill bit is pushed back to guarantee correct depth setting.
  • Two Drilling Modes:
    • Hammer Drilling: Engaged by pulling back the adjusting sleeve and twisting it a quarter turn counter-clockwise. This mode is ideal for drilling into concrete and masonry.
    • Rotary Only: Engaged by unlocking the adjusting sleeve with a quarter turn clockwise, allowing a spring to push it forward. Then, twisting the adjusting sleeve a quarter turn counter-clockwise locks it into the "drilling only" position. This mode is suitable for drilling into wood, metal, or other materials where impact is not desired.
  • Bit Chucking: Involves pulling back the locking sleeve, inserting the bit, and releasing the sleeve. The bit should be turned until the locking sleeve snaps back into position, ensuring a secure connection.
  • Lubrication of Chuck: The chuck end of the bit shank should always be cleaned and lightly lubricated with Hilti spray lubricant before insertion to ensure smooth operation and prolong bit life.
  • HDI Anchor Setting: The TE-D-SD Setting Tool is inserted into the chuck (similar to a drill bit). With both hammering and rotation, the tool is used to "hammer" the plug into the anchor until the setting tool bottoms out, indicating the anchor is properly set.
  • Safety Glasses: Recommended for use with most tools, and a face or dust mask if the cutting operation is dusty.
  • Ear Protectors: Recommended for extended periods of use to prevent hearing damage.
  • Work Area: Keep the work area clean, well-lit, and free of clutter to prevent accidents. Children and visitors should be kept a safe distance away.
  • Proper Apparel: Avoid loose clothing or jewelry that could get caught in moving parts. Rubber gloves and footwear are recommended for outdoor work.
  • Tool Handling: Do not force the tool; it performs better and safer at its designed rate. Use clamps or a vise to secure work, freeing both hands for tool operation. Avoid overreaching and maintain proper footing and balance.
  • Cord Care: Never carry the tool by its cord or yank the cord to disconnect it. Keep the cord away from heat, oil, and sharp edges.
  • Disconnecting Tools: Always disconnect the tool when not in use, before servicing, or when changing accessories.
  • Adjusting Keys and Wrenches: Form a habit of checking that all adjusting keys and wrenches are removed from the tool before turning it on.
  • Accidental Starting: Avoid carrying a plugged-in tool with a finger on the switch. Ensure the switch is off when plugging in.
  • Outdoor Use: When using the tool outdoors, use only extension cords marked "Suitable for use with outdoor appliances" and store them indoors when not in use.
  • Accessory Use: The use of accessories other than those recommended by Hilti may be hazardous or result in damage to the tool.

Maintenance Features

  • Permanent Lubrication: The TE-22 is permanently lubricated, reducing the need for regular greasing by the user.
  • Bit Maintenance:
    • No Excessive Pressure: The TE-22's operating principle means excessive operator pressure is not needed. Avoid forcing the bit or letting it overheat to ensure long bit life.
    • Resharpening: Sharp bits perform better than dull ones. Resharpen bits as frequently as needed, following specific instructions.
    • Carbide Bit Regrinding: Can be done with a normal grinding wheel (silicon carbide, hardness H to J, grit size 80). It's best to use a commercially available adjustable-angle drill grinding bit holder. Short back-and-forth movements will produce a good ground finish with minimal heating. Carbide cutting edges must never be cooled in water.
  • Preventive Maintenance:
    • Cord Check: Regularly check the cord for wear or fraying.
    • Air Passages: Keep the motor's air passages clear of dirt and dust to ensure proper cooling and operation.
  • Servicing: All repairs and adjustments, including inspection and replacement of brushes, switches, and power cords, should be performed at a Hilti Repair Center. Only identical replacement parts, as shown on the parts list, should be used for servicing.
  • Warranty: The Hilti TE-22 drill comes with a 90-day warranty from the date of shipment to the original purchaser, covering defects in material or workmanship. The warranty is valid provided the tool is used according to Hilti instructions, repairs are done by authorized Hilti service personnel, damage is not due to normal wear and tear, and the tool has not been abused or misused. Defective tools should be returned to a local Hilti representative for forwarding to a Hilti Repair Center. Hilti will replace or repair defective parts without cost (excluding shipping and insurance). Hilti is not obligated for consequential or other damages related to the tool's use or inability to use. This warranty is the sole warranty provided by Hilti.
