Overview

This document describes the HTP Crossover Water Heater, specifically the RGH-150 and RGH-199 models, which are fully condensing, wall-hung units designed for indoor potable water heating. The manual covers installation, start-up, maintenance, parts, and warranty information, emphasizing safety precautions and proper operating procedures.

Function Description

The HTP Crossover Water Heater is a high-efficiency, tankless-style water heater that utilizes condensing technology to provide hot water on demand. It features a 316L stainless steel fire tube heat exchanger with internal aluminum, designed to extract maximum heat from the combustion process. The unit incorporates a 10 to 1 modulating combustion system, which adjusts burner output to match demand, ensuring optimal efficiency and reliability. An integrated control system monitors and regulates fan speed and output, allowing the water heater to deliver only the necessary amount of hot water. The electronic LCD display provides real-time monitoring of functions and allows for programming system parameters. The combustion system includes a variable speed blower, gas valve, mixer, burner, and spark ignition for efficient and clean combustion. The water heater is equipped with various sensors (inlet, outlet, flue temperature, pressure) for accurate system control and safety. It also includes a built-in condensate disposal system and a low water cut-off (LWCO) probe to prevent overheating and damage to the heat exchanger.

Important Technical Specifications

The RGH-150 model has a minimum/maximum input of 15,000/150,000 Btu/Hr, while the RGH-199 model offers 19,900/199,000 Btu/Hr. Hot water capacity varies with temperature rise: for a 77°F rise, the RGH-150 provides 3.7 GPM and the RGH-199 provides 5 GPM. Both models are Category IV, sealed combustion direct vent, power vent appliances. They can use 2" (50 feet) or 3" (100 feet) Schedule 40 PVC, CPVC, or PP vent runs. The RGH-150 weighs 90 lbs, and the RGH-199 weighs 100 lbs. Gas supply pressure for both NG and LP is 3.5" to 14" WC. Manifold pressure ranges from 0.006" to -0.13" WC for NG/LP. The units operate on 120V 60 Hz, 10A, with a maximum power consumption of 72W (100W with pump). Ambient operating temperature range is 33 – 104°F (0.6 – 40°C), with relative humidity up to 90% at 104°F (40°C). The DHW setpoint temperature range is 100-140°F (35-60°C). Internal pipe material is copper, and the heat exchanger is 316L Stainless Steel. Water capacity for DHW is 2.3 gallons for the RGH-150 and 3.5 gallons for the RGH-199. Safety devices include an optical flame sensor, burner plate high limit (392°F), water temperature high limit sensor (203°F), water leak detection, three-stage freeze protection (activates at 46°F), exhaust temperature high limit sensor (190°F), blocked flue and intake sensor, condensate switch, and built-in low water cut-off probe.

Usage Features

The water heater offers several operating modes:

  • Standard (DHW) Mode: Activated when there is a call for hot water.
  • Preheat or Internal Recirculation Modes: Factory programmed to maintain the set point temperature 24/7. The internal recirculation mode allows programming specific recirculation functions by day and time for efficient water circulation.
  • External Recirculation Mode: Keeps an external recirculation loop warm for efficient hot water production and freeze protection. The installer can program specific recirculation functions.
  • Cascade Operation: Up to sixteen units can be configured to work together as a single system, with one master and multiple followers, providing increased turndown, redundancy, and efficiency.
  • Electronic LCD Display: High-resolution display for monitoring functions and programming system parameters.
  • Lock Function: Prevents unauthorized changes to settings.
  • Freeze Protection: Activates based on internal water temperature, cycling pumps and burner to prevent freezing.

Maintenance Features

The manual outlines several maintenance procedures to ensure optimal performance and longevity:

  • Annual Inspection: Recommended by a qualified service technician, preferably at the start of the heating season.
  • Surrounding Area Check: Ensure the area around the water heater is clear of combustible materials, flammable liquids, and air contaminants (e.g., chlorine, fluorine).
  • Cabinet Closure: Ensure the water heater cabinet is securely closed during operation.
  • Power Source Check: Verify proper connection of the power cord and main power line.
  • Control Panel Check: Observe the control panel for power-on status and error codes.
  • Exhaust Vent and Intake Pipe Terminations Check: Verify that terminations are clean and free of obstructions.
  • Exhaust Vent and Intake Piping Inspection: Visually inspect for blockages, leakage, or deterioration, and ensure bracing is undamaged.
  • Pressure Relief Valve Inspection: Visually inspect for weeping or leakage, and test operation annually by lifting the lever.
  • Condensate Drain System Check: Inspect the discharge end of the condensate drain tubing for flue gas leakage and ensure the condensate neutralizer (if applicable) is full of marble chips.
  • Primary and Gas Piping Inspection: Perform a gas leak inspection and visually inspect for leaks around water connections and the heat exchanger.
  • Burner Cleaning: Clean the exterior of the burner.
  • Cold Water Inlet Filter Cleaning: Remove and clean the filter with a toothbrush and running water.
  • Flushing the Heat Exchanger: A complicated procedure to be performed by a qualified service technician, involving disconnection of electrical power, closing shutoff valves, connecting hoses, pouring cleaning solution, running the pump, and rinsing the system.
  • Error Code Display: The unit displays numerical error codes (e.g., Er:10 for flame extinguished, Er:16 for high operating temperature) to assist in troubleshooting, with suggested remedies provided in the manual.
  • Maintenance Report: A checklist is provided for recording completed inspection activities and ensuring compliance with safety and operational requirements.
