Questions and Answers

Why is the water from my HTP EVG080C2X045H Water Heater too hot or not hot enough?
    • D
      Deborah Mercer PhDJul 31, 2025
If the water from your HTP Water Heater is either too hot or not hot enough, the mixing valve setting might be too high or too low. Refer to the mixing valve manufacturer's instructions for setting the mixed temperature. Alternatively, the mixing valve could be out of calibration and needs replacement. The thermostat setting might also be too high or low, so change the setting as required. Other possible causes include a thermostat out of calibration (replace the thermostat), missing thermostat access panel(s) and/or insulation (inspect and replace as needed), a thermostat not resting tightly against the mounting plate (ensure that retaining spring(s) or mounting screws hold the thermostat tightly to mounting plates), or utility control limiting energy usage.

What to do if my HTP EVG080C2X045H T&P valve discharges?
    • D
      denisewilliamsAug 9, 2025
If the T&P valve on your HTP Water Heater is discharging, try opening and closing the handle to reseat the valve. If that doesn't work, it could be due to thermal expansion in a closed water system, in which case you should install a thermal expansion tank. A damaged or defective valve can also cause this issue, requiring you to replace the T&P relief valve. Note: DO NOT plug the T&P valve under any circumstances.

What to do if my HTP EVG080C2X045H is not providing enough hot water?
    • C
      Christy VegaAug 13, 2025
If your HTP Water Heater isn't providing enough hot water, it could be undersized for your needs; try reducing your hot water usage or replace it with a larger model. Defective heating element(s) can also be the cause; check the amperage and replace the element(s) if the amperage is low. Another potential issue is incorrect wiring or a defective thermostat, causing only one element to function; check the wiring or replace the thermostat. Utility Control limiting energy usage.

Why does my HTP EVG080C2X045H Water Heater have water leaks?
    • S
      smithjonathanAug 18, 2025
Water leaks in your HTP Water Heater can stem from several sources. Check for loose connections between the inlet/outlet piping, relief valve, and the hex nut union on the tank fittings, and tighten them as needed. Another cause could be a damaged element seal ring washer, which would require replacement. Also, inspect the gasket around the heating element(s) and replace it if necessary.

    Ryan SmithAug 22, 2025
Why does my HTP Water Heater have a hot water odor?
    • J
      Jennifer ColonAug 22, 2025
A hot water odor in your HTP Water Heater could be due to a high sulfate or mineral content in the water supply; in this case, drain and flush the water heater, then refill it. Another potential cause is bacteria in the water supply; check with a local water treatment specialist or utility to identify and address this problem.

Why is my HTP EVG080C2X045H Water Heater making noise?
    • A
      Anita RobinsonAug 26, 2025
Noisy operation in your HTP Water Heater is often due to hard water scale buildup on the element(s). Remove the element and clean it.

Why is there no hot water in my HTP Water Heater?
    • L
      Laurie MeltonNov 4, 2025
There are several reasons why your HTP Water Heater might not be producing hot water. It could be due to the manual disconnect switch being turned off; simply turn the switch on. Alternatively, a fuse might be blown, or a circuit breaker tripped, indicating a possible short circuit or malfunction that requires diagnosing the system and replacing the fuse or resetting the breaker. Other potential causes include a circuit overload (provide adequate circuit for load), a grounded element or thermostat (repair or replace defective part(s)), an open Manual Reset High Limit (refer to Part 6, this manual. 1. Replace upper thermostat assembly 2. Replace upper thermostat assembly 3. Repair wire connections), improper wiring (check and rewire per Wiring Detail), or utility control limiting energy usa...

Overview

This document is a Use and Care Manual for the HTP Everlast Grid Enabled Electric Water Heaters. It provides comprehensive instructions for installation, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting, along with important safety information and warranty details.

Function Description:

The HTP Everlast Grid Enabled Electric Water Heater is designed for indoor installations to provide hot water for residential use. Its "grid-enabled" feature suggests integration with smart grid systems, allowing utilities to manage its operation for thermal energy storage, potentially optimizing energy consumption and costs. The water heater heats potable water using electric heating elements, controlled by thermostats. It is equipped with safety features such as a temperature and pressure relief (T&P) valve and a high-limit control (ECO) to prevent excessive temperatures and pressures. The manual emphasizes proper installation by qualified personnel to ensure safe and efficient operation.

Important Technical Specifications:

The manual includes a "Specifications and Dimensions" table (Table 2) and an "Electrical Specifications Including Corresponding Wattages / Voltages / Amperages" table (Table 3).

  • Water Chemistry Requirements:
    • pH: Between 6.5 and 8.5.
    • Hardness: Less than 12 grains (200 mg/L) for residential use at temperatures below 140°F.
    • Chloride concentration: Less than 100 ppm (mg/L).
    • Total Dissolved Solids (TDS): Less than 500 ppm (mg/L).
  • Clearances: 0" top, bottom, sides, and back to combustible materials. Minimum recommended service clearances are 24" front, 6" top, and 6" sides.

Usage Features:

  • Installation: Requires installation by a qualified installer/service technician in an indoor location, protected from freezing, and with adequate clearances for service. Must be installed upright on a level surface. Proper plumbing, including the installation of hot outlet heat traps, cold water inlet dip tube, and a T&P valve, is critical. Dielectric unions or galvanized steel fittings are explicitly prohibited. Thermal expansion tanks are required for closed water systems.
  • Grid Enabled Feature: For 80-gallon and larger models, the water heater is "locked" per Federal Regulations for thermal energy storage. The lower heating element is initially disabled and must be manually enabled by the utility or a system technician.
  • Water Temperature Adjustment: The upper thermostat control is used to adjust the water temperature. After adjustment, the System Technician should be contacted to set the grid-based controller. A warning is provided regarding scalding risk, especially for households with small children, disabled, or elderly persons, recommending a 120°F or lower setting or the use of an ASSE 1017 rated mixing valve for higher temperatures.
  • Filling the Heater: Before turning on power, the tank must be completely filled with water, and air purged from the system by opening hot water faucets.
  • Safety Controls: Equipped with a combination thermostat and high limit control (ECO). If water temperature becomes excessively high, the ECO breaks the circuit and must be manually reset after the cause of the over-temperature condition is corrected.

Maintenance Features:

  • Annual Inspection: The water heater should be inspected annually by a qualified service technician to ensure safe and efficient operation.
  • Monthly Draining (Every two weeks in hard water locations): It is recommended to drain a few quarts of water from the heater to flush sediment deposits, which helps lengthen service life. Power must be turned off during this operation to prevent damage to heating elements.
  • T&P Relief Valve Inspection: The T&P valve lever must be operated annually to ensure waterways are clear. The valve should be inspected and replaced by a licensed plumbing contractor or qualified service technician at least once every three years to check for corrosion or tampering.
  • Heating Element Cleaning/Replacement: If elements are hissing/singing excessively, they may need cleaning. Replacement elements must match the original voltage, wattage, and construction, with an incoloy sheath and stainless steel hex plug. The tank must be completely drained before element removal.
  • Water Chemistry Monitoring: Regular checks of water pH, hardness, chloride concentration, and TDS are recommended to prevent lime scale build-up and corrosion, which are not covered by warranty.
  • Vacation/Extended Shut-off Periods: Instructions are provided for shutting off the heater during mild/warm and cold weather periods, including draining the tank in freezing conditions.
