Overview

The SS5 Stepper Servo Motor Driver is a sophisticated digital step servo motor drive based on a 32-bit DSP with an advanced control algorithm. It is designed to provide optimal performance for stepper servo motors, offering smooth operation, precise torque, and stability across various speed ranges. The drive incorporates motor self-test and parameter auto-tuning technologies, making it adaptable to different motors and easy to use. This results in quieter operation, reduced heat generation, and smoother motor movement.

Function Description:

The SS5 driver is designed to control stepper servo motors, translating input signals into precise motor movements. It supports both Step&Direction and CW&CCW pulse modes for controlling motor rotation. The drive features a self-test function that allows it to perform a 2-revolution, 3 revolutions per second (rps) move test in both clockwise (CW) and counter-clockwise (CCW) directions, aiding in initial setup and troubleshooting. An auto-tuning button is available to match the motor to the drive, although in most cases, the motor and drive are pre-matched.

The drive's functionality is managed through an 8-bit DIP switch, which allows for setting subdivision accuracy (microstepping), dynamic current, self-test function, and pulse mode selection. It also includes various input and output connectors for power, encoder signals, control signals, and output signals, facilitating integration into a larger system.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Supply Voltage: 24V (Min) to 75V (MAX) DC.
  • Output Current (Peak): 1.0A (Min) to 9.8A (MAX).
  • Control Signal Input Current: 6mA (Min) to 15mA (MAX), with a typical value of 10mA.
  • STEP/DIR Input Signal Voltage: 4.0V (Min) to 28.0V (MAX), with a typical value of 5.0V.
  • Step Frequency: 2Hz (Min) to 1MHz (MAX).
  • STEP Minimum Pulse Width (High and Low): 250Ns.
  • DIR Minimum Pulse Width: 50us.
  • Drive Initialization Time: 2S.
  • Digital Filter: 1MHz for high-speed inputs.
  • Output Signal (INP+/INP-, ALM+/ALM-): Optocoupler isolated OC output, maximum withstand voltage 30VDC, maximum saturation current 100mA.

Usage Features:

  • 16 Microstep Resolution Settings: The drive offers a wide range of microstepping options, from 200 steps/rev up to 25000 steps/rev, allowing for fine control over motor movement.
  • Adjustable Running Current: The actual output current can be set from 40% to 100% of the motor's rated current using DIP switches SW1 and SW2.
  • Servo Control Algorithm: Ensures accurate speed and position control with good responsiveness.
  • Real-time Current Adjustment: Minimizes heat generation by dynamically adjusting the current based on the load.
  • Control Modes: Supports both Step&Direction (SW4 OFF) and CW&CCW (SW4 ON) pulse control. In CW&CCW mode, the STEP terminal controls CW movement, and the DIR terminal controls CCW movement.
  • Enable/Disable Functionality: The EN input enables or disables the drive amplifier. A falling signal into the EN input can also reset error status and reactivate the drive amplifier.
  • Optically Isolated Inputs: Control signal inputs are optically isolated, accepting 5 to 24 volt single-ended or differential signals, with a maximum voltage of 28V.
  • Status Indicator LEDs: Green and red LEDs provide visual feedback on the drive's operational status and fault conditions.

Maintenance Features:

  • Status Indicator:
    • Green LED: Solid green indicates the motor is enabled; flashing green indicates the motor is disabled.
    • Red LED: Off when the drive is normal. Flashes in cycles to indicate specific fault conditions:
      • 1 flash: Drive overcurrent.
      • 2 flashes: Power supply voltage is too high.
      • 3 flashes: Drive over temperature.
      • 4 flashes: Motor phase line open.
      • 5 flashes: Drive internal fault.
      • 6 flashes: Encoder failure.
  • Safety Precautions:
    • Installation: Only qualified personnel should install, connect, operate, and inspect the product.
    • Power Management: Always turn off power before moving, installing, connecting, or inspecting the product. Do not touch connection terminals within 30 seconds of turning off power due to residual voltage.
    • Environmental Considerations: Avoid using the product with flammable materials, or in explosive, flammable, corrosive gas, or water splash environments. Ensure adequate air cooling to prevent overheating, as the drive generates heat. The surrounding air temperature should not exceed 40°C. Do not expose the drive to moisture or metal particles.
    • Physical Integrity: Do not disassemble or repair the motor and drive. Regularly check for and clean accumulated dust in the open parts of the drive to prevent fire hazards.
    • Voltage Adherence: Always keep the drive's power supply voltage below the rated value to prevent fire or damage.

The SS5 Stepper Servo Motor Driver is a robust and intelligent solution for precise motor control, designed with user-friendliness and safety in mind.
