Chapter 1. General description 21
The minimum system configuration requires at least one SAS HDD or SSD in the system for
AIX, Linux, or VIOS and two drives for IBM i. However, if using a Fibre Channel attached SAN
indicated by FC 0837, an HDD or SSD is not required. Attachment to the SAN using a Fibre
Channel over Ethernet connection is also supported.
The Power 750 and the Power 760 supports both 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch SAS DASD hard disk
drives (HDD). The 2.5-inch (SFF) HDD can either be mounted in the system unit or in the
EXP24S SFF Gen2-bay Drawer (FC 5887) or in an 12X I/O Drawer (FC 5802). The 3.5-inch
hard disk drives can be attached to the Power 750 and Power 760 servers, but must be
located in an EXP12S I/O drawer (FC 5886).
1.7 I/O drawers
The Power 750 and the Power 760 servers support the following 12X attached I/O drawers,
providing extensive capability to expand the overall server expandability and connectivity:
FC 5802 provides PCIe slots and SFF SAS disk slots
FC 5877 provides PCIe slots only
Disk-only I/O drawers are also supported, providing large storage capacity and multiple
partition support:
EXP30 Ultra SSD I/O drawer (FC EDR1)
EXP24S SFF Gen2-bay drawer (FC 5887) for high-density storage holds SAS Hard Disk
drives.
EXP12S (FC 5886) drawer holds a 3.5-inch SAS disk or SSD.
A suggestion is that any attached I/O drawers be located in the same rack as the Power 750
Express or the Power 760 server for ease of service, but they can be installed in separate
racks if the application or other rack content requires it.
1.7.1 12X I/O Drawer PCIe
The FC 5802 and FC 5877 expansion units are 19-inch, rack-mountable, I/O expansion
drawers that are designed to be attached to the system by using 12X double data rate (DDR)
cables. The expansion units can accommodate ten generation-3 cassettes. These cassettes
can be installed and removed without removing the drawer from the rack.
A maximum of two FC 5802 drawers can be placed on the same 12X loop. FC 5877 is the
same as FC 5802, except it does not support disk bays. FC 5877 can be on the same loop as
FC 5802. FC 5877 cannot be upgraded to FC 5802.
The I/O drawer has the following attributes:
18 SAS hot-swap SFF disk bays (only FC 5802)
10 PCIe based I/O adapter slots (blind swap)
Redundant hot-swappable power and cooling units
Requirement: Two or more processor DCMs are required in order to attach a FC 5802,
FC 5877, or FC EDR1.
