Chapter 1. General description 27
Other key points beyond I/O drawers are summarized in the following list:
All SAS disk drives supported on the POWER6, POWER6+, and POWER7 rack and tower
servers are supported. However, SCSI disk drives are not supported.
Quarter-Inch Cartridge (QIC) tape drives are not supported. Many newer, faster,
larger-capacity replacement options are available.
IBM i IOPs are not supported, which impacts any older PCI adapters that require an IOP.
This can impact older I/O devices such as some tape libraries or optical drive libraries or
any HVD SCSI device. It means twinax displays or printers cannot be attached except
using an OEM protocol converter. It means SDLC-attached devices that use a LAN or
WAN adapter are not supported. SNA applications still can run when encapsulated inside
TCP/IP, but the physical device attachment cannot be SNA. It means the earlier Fibre
Channel and SCSI controllers that depended upon an IOP being present are not
supported.
1.12 Server and virtualization management
This section discusses the supported management interfaces for the servers.
The Hardware Management Console (HMC) is optional for managing the IBM Power 750 and
required for managing Power 760. It has a set of functions that are necessary to manage
the system:
Creating and maintaining a multiple partition environment
Displaying a virtual operating system session terminal for each partition
Displaying a virtual operator panel of contents for each partition
Detecting, reporting, and storing changes in hardware conditions
Powering managed systems on and off
Acting as a service focal point for service representatives to determine an appropriate
service strategy
The IBM Power 750 is supported by the Integrated Virtualization Manager (IVM) and an HMC.
For the Power 750, there are two service strategies for non-HMC systems:
Full system partition: A single partition owns all the server resources and only one
operating system may be installed.
Partitioned system: In this configuration, the system can have more than one partition and
can be running more than one operating system. In this environment, partitions are
managed by the Integrated Virtualization Manager (IVM), which includes some of the
functions offered by the HMC.
The Power 760 requires the usage of an HMC.
In 2012, IBM announced a new HMC model, machine type 7042-CR7. Hardware features on
the CR7 model include a second disk drive (FC 1998) for RAID 1 data mirroring, and the
option of a redundant power supply. At the time of writing, the latest version of HMC code was
V7R7.7.0 (SP1). This code level also includes the new LPAR function support, which allows
the HMC to manage more LPARs per processor core. A core can now be partitioned in up to
20 LPARs (0.05 of a core).
IBM i considerations: Without serial number upgrades, 5250 Enterprise Enablements are
not transferable from older servers and are a new purchase on the Power 760.
