Chapter 5. Monitoring Operations
Exceptions
If an exception occurs, the entire background of the Views area will change from Green to Red and any
groups containing objects in an exception condition will have a red background. This is an indication that
one or more objects, CPCs or images, have entered a status that you indicated is unacceptable. Usually
the only acceptable status is Operating.
Perform the following steps to handle an exception condition:
1. Double click on the Exceptions icon in the Views area. This causes two things to happen.
The background of the Views area will return to Green, making it possible for a new exception to
be recognized. Only a red background on the Exceptions icon will remain.
The Exceptions view, displayed in the work area, will contain the objects that have an
unacceptable status. The background color of the object is associated with a particular status
condition. Double click on the object to view the Details panel.
2. A Hardware or Operating System Message may be logged related to the exception condition. If the
Hardware Messages icon changes to blue and begins to flash following an exception, Problem
Analysis has logged a hardware related message. In addition, any CPC objects with a message, will
have a blue, or half blue background. Drag and drop the CPC onto Hardware Messages to view the
message. Operating System messages are handled in a similar way, but the associated object will be
an image and the background color is cyan.
3. If additional problem information is required, such as the state and status of a particular CHPID or
processor, then establish a connection to a CPC by dragging and dropping the CPC onto Single
Object Operations.
4. If an Activate is required to restore the object to an Operating state, select the object from a Group
that uses an activation profile matching the way you want to bring up the object. The activation profile
used within the Exceptions view may not be the correct one. Once the object returns to an acceptable
status it will be removed from the Exceptions work area. When all exceptions have been resolved, the
red background of the Exceptions icon will be removed, and the Exceptions work area will be empty.
If Service is required, and automatic problem reporting is enabled, the service call will be placed
automatically.
