  Your signal may not be reaching as far as usual due to several reasons. The transmit power might be set too low; push [FUNC], then [TX] to reset the transmit power, noting that RF-PWR 3 is maximum power. Alternatively, if manual tuning is selected, the antenna tuner may be improperly matched to the operating frequency; push [TUNE] to tune using the antenna tuner, or select “automatic tuning” in the set mode. Finally, you might have CW or FSK mode selected for voice transmission; push [MODE] to select USB mode (or AM, R3E, etc.).

Finally, the squelch might be closed; adjust the squelch to the proper level or push [SQL] to turn it OFF to receive weak signals.

  Unclear or distorted received audio can result from several factors. The wrong operating mode might be selected, so push [MODE] to select the proper operating mode. If AGC is deactivated while receiving a strong signal, push [AGC] to activate the AGC function. Also, if the noise blanker is turned ON when receiving a strong signal, push [NB] to turn it OFF. Finally, check the [CLARITY] control; adjust it to receive proper audio output if it's rotated too far clockwise or counterclockwise.

Reset it by pushing [FUNC], then [TX] to reset the transmit power. (RF-PWR 3 is maximum power.) * The antenna tuner might be improperly matched to the operating frequency when manual tuning is selected. Push [TUNE] to tune the connected antenna tuner or select "automatic tuning" using set mode. * CW or FSK mode might be selected for voice transmission. Select J3E mode (or H3E, R3E etc.) by pushing [MODE]. * The microphone may be too close to your mouth. Speak into it naturally, without holding it too close.
