This document describes the Jensen JCR-390 Stereo Compact Disc Player with AM/FM Digital Dual Alarm Clock Radio. It functions as a multi-purpose audio device, offering CD playback, AM/FM radio reception, and an auxiliary input for external audio devices, all integrated with a dual alarm clock.
Function Description
The JCR-390 serves as a comprehensive bedside audio and alarm solution. Its primary functions include:
- CD Playback: The unit features a top-loading CD player capable of playing commercial CDs and self-compiled CD-R/CD-RW discs. It supports basic playback controls such as play, pause, stop, skip, and search. A program play mode allows users to arrange tracks in a desired sequence, and repeat functions (Repeat 1 for a single track, Repeat All for the entire disc) are also available.
- AM/FM Radio: The device includes an AM/FM digital tuner, allowing users to listen to their favorite radio stations. It supports both manual and automatic tuning methods. For convenience, it offers the ability to store up to 10 FM and 10 AM stations as presets, which can be easily recalled.
- Dual Alarm Clock: A key feature is the dual alarm system, allowing two separate alarm times to be set. Users can choose to wake up to a CD, a beeping alarm, or a selected AM or FM radio station. The alarm volume gradually increases from low to high for a gentler wake-up experience. A snooze function provides a temporary reprieve, silencing the alarm for 9 minutes before it sounds again.
- Auxiliary Input: An AUX IN JACK is provided for connecting external audio devices such as MP3 players, CD players, smart phones, and iPods (excluding 3rd generation iPod shuffle). This allows users to play audio from these external sources through the JCR-390's speakers.
- USB Charging Port: The unit includes a front-mounted USB charging port (DC 5V – 2.1A) specifically designed for charging cell phones or small portable devices. It is important to note that this port is for charging only and does not support data transfer or connection to a computer.
- Sleep Timer: A sleep timer function allows users to set the unit to automatically turn off after a designated period (ranging from 90 to 5 minutes), providing a convenient way to fall asleep to music or radio without it playing all night.
- Dimmer Function: The display brightness can be adjusted between low and high settings using the dimmer function, catering to user preference, especially in a bedroom environment.
Usage Features
The JCR-390 is designed for user-friendly operation with several convenient features:
- LED Display: A clear LED display shows the current time, radio frequency, CD track information, and various indicators for active functions like AM/FM, CD, AUX-IN, program, repeat, sleep, and alarms.
- Intuitive Controls: The unit features clearly labeled buttons for power, function selection, volume adjustment, time setting, alarm setting, CD playback controls (play/pause, stop, skip/search), program, repeat, snooze/sleep, and CD door open/close.
- Battery Back-up System: To ensure clock and alarm settings are retained during a power outage, the unit is equipped with a battery back-up system that uses two 'AA' (UM-3) batteries (not included). This prevents the loss of settings and the need for re-configuration after a power interruption.
- Gradual Wake-up Volume: When waking up to CD, alarm, or radio, the volume gradually increases, providing a more pleasant start to the day.
- Automatic Alarm Shut-off: If no buttons are pressed when an alarm is sounding, it will automatically turn off after 60 minutes.
- Preset Radio Stations: The ability to store and recall up to 10 AM and 10 FM radio stations allows for quick access to favorite broadcasts without manual tuning each time.
- Adjustable Display Brightness: The dimmer function allows users to adjust the LED display's brightness, which can be particularly useful in a dark room to avoid excessive light.
Maintenance Features
Proper care and maintenance are essential for the longevity and optimal performance of the JCR-390:
- Cleaning: The unit should be cleaned with a dry cloth. Solvents or detergents should never be used, as they can damage the device.
- CD Care: To ensure smooth CD playback, discs should be kept clean. If skipping or interruptions occur, the bottom surface of the CD may need cleaning. Discs should be wiped from the center outwards with a soft cleaning cloth. Labels or seals should not be attached to CD-R/CD-RW discs, as this can cause malfunctions.
- Environmental Considerations: The unit should be kept away from excessive force, shock, dust, extreme temperatures, direct sunlight, hot, humid, or dusty places. It should also be positioned away from heating appliances and sources of electrical noise like fluorescent lamps or motors.
- Battery Management: When the unit is not in use for an extended period, the back-up batteries should be removed to prevent leakage and potential damage. Old and new batteries, or different types of batteries (alkaline, carbon-zinc, rechargeable), should not be mixed. Batteries should be installed with correct polarity.
- Power Cord Handling: The power adaptor should be handled carefully. To completely disconnect the apparatus from the mains, the AC adaptor should be unplugged from the wall socket.
- Furniture Protection: The unit is equipped with non-skid rubber 'feet' to prevent movement. To protect fine wooden furniture from potential marks or stains caused by these feet, it is recommended to apply small self-adhesive felt pads to the bottom of the rubber 'feet'.
- Servicing: In case of damage (e.g., damaged power cord, liquid spills, exposure to rain, operational issues, or physical damage), servicing should be referred to qualified personnel. Users should not attempt to disassemble the unit or perform internal repairs.
- Laser Safety: The compact disc player contains a low-power laser device. Users are advised not to disassemble the casing, touch the lens, or insert objects into the safety slot to avoid exposure to potentially harmful laser radiation.
