Generalacoustic
considerations
Takethisinformationintoconsiderationwhendeployingthetransponders.
Acousticrange
Thetermdepthratingshouldnotbeconfusedwiththetermacousticrange.Theacoustic
rangeisdependentonanumberoffactors,andsomeofthesefactorsarebeyondthe
controloftheuser.
Vesselsystem
Thedirectivityandcoverageareaofthevessel’ssystemwillvarydependingonthe
system’scomponentsandtheirspecications.Somesystemshavehighdirectivityand
omnidirectionalcoverage,whileothershavereducedcoverageandlessdirectivity.The
transpondershouldalwaysbewithinthecoverageconeofthevesselsystem.
Transducertype
Severaltypesoftransducerscanbeusedwiththetransponderstomeetoperational
requirements.Anomnidirectionaltransducer,suchastheTD180,coversalargearea
buthaslessacousticpowerthanafocusedtransducer,suchastheTD30V .Afocused
signalwillgiveasmallerfootprint/coverage.Thevesselshouldalwaysbewithinthe
signalfootprintofthetransponder.
TxPower
Theabilitytodetectsignalsdependsonthesignalstrength.Thetransmissionpowercan
beadjusted,bothforthevessel’ssystemandforthetransponder.
Acousticnoise
Acousticnoiseispresentonallvessels.Undercertainconditions,thenoiselevelmay
beexcessive.Avessel’spropellersandthrustersgeneratenoiseduringmanoeuvring,
andincertaincases,on-boardmachineryandpumpsmayalsogeneratenoisewhenin
use.Heavypropeller/thrusteruseandwavescancreateairbubblesthatcangetinfront
ofthevessel’stransducerandblocktheacousticsignal.
