18. I would like to control my Virus B, Nova, Nord Modular, An1x
and Ms-2000R with the KARMA Function. It works fine with the
notes that KARMA sends through MIDI. But if you choose an EG-
pattern in the KARMA that controls dynamics or CCs, it won’t do
the same thing with the Virus for example. An example Program
is Band E.Program 057 Power Saw. It uses GE-setup
0919:Dr.Chopper 3/E57.
Ah yes, one of my personal favorites ;-) Consulting the Voice Name List,
Page 25, we find that the CCs being generated by KARMA for GE 0919
are:
CC Pattern A - CC 08 (Balance) - controls the L/R pan of the IFX
CC Pattern B - CC 16 (Ribbon) - controls the Filter Cutoff Frequency
Env 1 - Velocity
Env 2 - CC 18 (Slider)
Env 3 - CC 21 (Knob 4-B above Joystick)
I am guessing that the effect you want is being caused by CC 16. Even
though the Karma has no ribbon, this CC number can still be assigned
to affect the internal program (and also is generally set up to do
something due to the Triton lineage of the Karma Programs).
To know exactly what is happening, you have to go into the parameters
for Program E057 Power Saw, and determine what “Ribbon” is mapped
to. In this case, we find that Ribbon is controlling the levels of the Filter
and the Filter EG, for both oscillators, on pages (4.1-2/3) & (4.2-2/3)
[Filt 1/2].
To get this same effect on some other synth, you would have to figure out
how to map CC 16 to Filter Frequency on the other synth.
Note that when trying to duplicate these effects on other synths, you
often have to go look into the programs themselves and determine what
the various CC numbers are doing. Just sending CC 18 (Slider) to a
Triton or Karma doesn’t necessarily do anything unless the Program
itself has assigned this CC to do something, and that something can be
just about anything, from Filter Cutoff to Resonance to Envelope
Attack/Decay to some IFX or MFX modulation, etc.
