3. Alarms
The D3M detector alarms in four different ways. Alarm thresholds can be set for each
alarm condition using Kromek’s Ciris software. Please not, these values are set at the
discretion of the Ciris user. When this upper limit is exceeded, the D3M will alert the
user. The user is also able to edit the displayed text. Please refer to the separate
CIRIS manual for instruction on how to change alarm thresholds and customise this
using CIRIS.
The four alarms are as follows:
1. Dose Alarm
2. Accumulated Dose Alarm
3. Alarm to provide an indication when the neutron level rises above ambient
4. Alarm to provide an indication when the gamma level rises above ambient
The dose alarm and alarm for accumulated dose refer to personal safety, ensuring
that a user is never put in danger. The threshold is set as a fixed number for both
dose and accumulated dose and can be tailored for a specific purpose or mission
using the CIRIS software.
The alarms for gamma and neutron levels operate on the principle that the number
of counts is measured when the detector is subject to ambient background
conditions, which is measured periodically while the detector is in use. As
background radiation fluctuates slightly, a variable is used to define the level above
which the detector will alarm. This is shown as a “k value” and can be customised
using the CIRIS software.
