Do you have a question about the KUHN FC2860TLD and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

This document is an operator's manual for the KUHN FC2860TLD, FC3160TLD, and FC3560TLD mower conditioners.

Function Description

The KUHN FC2860TLD, FC3160TLD, and FC3560TLD mower conditioners are designed for mowing hay fields, grass silage fields, and improved pastures to harvest fodder for livestock. They are not designed for mowing road sides. The machines feature a cutterbar for mowing and a finger conditioning rotor to process the cut crop, promoting faster drying. The conditioning intensity and swath width can be adjusted to suit different crop types and desired drying rates.

Usage Features

Safety First: The manual emphasizes reading and understanding all safety instructions and decals before operation. It warns against operating the machine without proper training and stresses the importance of keeping safety decals clean and legible.

Coupling and Uncoupling: The machine attaches to tractors with a 3-point hitch coupler (category 2 or 3N) and requires lower link stabilizers. Operators must ensure the PTO speed matches the Gyrodine swivel hitch input speed. When coupling, the tractor lift rods should be adjusted for parallel hitch pins. Uncoupling involves lowering the mowing unit, parking stand, and three-point linkage, then disconnecting the PTO shaft and hydraulic/electrical connections.

Transport Position: Before transport, the mowing unit must be raised, lift cylinder valves shut, drawbar folded, drawbar shift cylinder valve shut, and side guards raised. The tractor PTO drive must never be engaged in transport position. The manual also details road safety equipment and recommends a maximum speed of 40 kph (25 mph) for tractor-machine assemblies on public roads.

Working Position Adjustments:

  • Cutting Height: Adjustable between 25 mm (1’’) and 85 mm (3.3’’) (or 55 mm (2.17’’) and 150 mm (5.91’’) with raised skid shoes). Adjustment is done via a pitch angle rod, with clockwise rotation reducing height and counter-clockwise increasing it.
  • Ground Pressure: Adjusted independently on each side of the mower unit. The force on each side should be approximately 60 daN (135 lbf). Adjustments are made by turning an adjustment screw, with 5 rotations varying pressure by 15-20 daN.
  • Finger Conditioning Rotor Speed: Adjustable to 780 min-1 (tortoise position) or 1000 min-1 (hare position) using a lever.
  • Conditioning Intensity: Controlled by an adjustment lever that sets the conditioning hood's relation to the rotor in 5 positions. Reducing the distance increases intensity, while increasing it reduces intensity.
  • Swathing and Wide Spreading: The machine includes two swath shields for adjusting swath width. Swath width varies by model, from 0.90 m (2’11’’) to 2.00 m (6’7’’) for FC2860TLD, up to 2.30 m (7’7’’) for FC3160TLD, and up to 2.70 m (8’10’’) for FC3560TLD. A wide spreading kit with 8 or 9 spreading fins is available to spread crop in even layers.

Machine Use: Before mowing, side and front guards must be lowered and locked. The tractor PTO drive should be engaged progressively to the desired speed. Drive speed should be adapted to working conditions.

Maintenance Features

Frequency Chart: The manual includes a frequency chart for maintenance tasks under normal conditions, including oil changes for side and Gyrodine gearboxes, and greasing of the drawbar pivot point and drawbar shift cylinder.

Cleaning: Regular cleaning of the conditioning hood and support tube is recommended.

Lubrication:

  • Grease: Multi-purpose grease grade NLGI 2 is recommended for all greasing points.
  • PTO Shafts: Primary and intermediate PTO shafts require greasing of universal joints, transmission tubes, and guide rings every 50 hours (primary) or 20 hours (intermediate). Friction slip clutches should be checked for locking.
  • Cutterbar: Lubricated for life and does not require regular maintenance.
  • Gearbox Oil:
    • Cutterbar: Oil volume is 3.0-L (FC2860TLD), 3.5-L (FC3160TLD), or 4-L (FC3560TLD) of 75W90 API-GL5 (extreme pressure) gear oil. Draining and refilling are required after service or leaks.
    • Side Gearbox: Oil volume is 2.7 L (0.71 US gal) of SAE 75W90 API-GL5 (extreme pressure) synthetic oil.
    • Gyrodine Gearbox: Oil volume is 3.0 L (0.79 US gal) of SAE 80W90 API-GL5 (extreme pressure) gear oil. Oil levels should be checked at the lower part of the level plug hole.

Maintenance Procedures:

  • Knives: Regular inspection for wear, damage, or distortion is crucial for cutting quality and safety. Knives must be replaced in pairs per disc to maintain balance. The length C must exceed 80 mm (3.15’’) and width B (at A=10mm) must exceed 34 mm (1.34’’). The attachment hole out-of-roundness L must not exceed 22 mm (0.87’’).
  • Securing Elements: Fixing bolts should be changed if distorted, if the locking compound is worn, or if the bolt head wear reaches the center line. Diameter D of the bolt's body must not be below 11 mm (0.43’’). Nuts should be replaced if wear reaches 5 mm (0.2’’). Spring plates should be replaced if distorted or if width B (at A=20mm) exceeds 60 mm (2.4’’).
  • Disc Replacement: Involves placing a wooden wedge between discs, removing bolts, and replacing the worn or damaged disc. Reinstallation requires respecting the disc's direction of rotation and ensuring a minimum play of 1 mm (0.04’’) between the spring plate and cutterbar skids.
  • Lifters: Two pairs of lifters are supplied and can be fitted on outer disks to improve forage transport.
  • Ground Pressure Adjustment System: If ground pressure adjustment is difficult, the torsion bars may need adjustment. This involves lifting the mowing unit, positioning blocks, removing the hood, extracting the torsion bar, and rotating it to adjust tension.
  • Rotor Safety System: A shear bolt system protects the rotor drive. If a shear bolt shears, it must be replaced with original manufacturer parts. Nuts are spaced at 120°.

Storage:

  • End of Season: Thorough cleaning, storage in a dry place, greasing connections between rotor arms and tine arms with never-seize grease, and greasing cylinder rods.
  • Start of Season: Pressurize the hydraulic circuit, check friction slip clutch, inspect and replace worn knives and bolts, check all nuts and bolts, re-read the manual, inspect and replace worn fingers, check all guards, and check tire pressure.

Dismantling and Scrapping: At the end of the machine's life, components must be disposed of or recycled according to local regulations. This includes depressurizing hydraulic circuits, emptying and recovering oils, and separating metal, plastic, and rubber components.
