Overview

This manual describes the Kwikset 62541/01 mechanical and electronic lock, providing comprehensive instructions for installation, operation, and maintenance.

Function Description:

The Kwikset 62541/01 is a door lock designed for residential use, available in both mechanical and electronic variants. Its primary function is to secure a door by engaging a latch bolt into a strike plate on the door frame. The lock features a knob-style design for both interior and exterior operation. The mechanical version relies on traditional key access for exterior entry and a turn mechanism for interior locking/unlocking. The electronic version, while not fully detailed in this specific manual, is implied to offer advanced features beyond simple mechanical operation, likely including keyless entry options. The manual focuses heavily on the mechanical installation process, which is foundational for both types.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Backset Options: The latch is adjustable to accommodate backsets of either 2-3/8" (60 mm) or 2-3/4" (70 mm). This flexibility ensures compatibility with a wide range of standard door preparations.
  • Door Thickness Compatibility: The lock is designed for doors with a thickness ranging from 1-3/8" to 2-1/4" (35 mm to 57 mm). For doors thicker than 2-1/4" (57 mm), a service kit from Kwikset is required, indicating a potential need for longer screws or specialized components.
  • Door Hole Diameter: The standard door hole diameter required for installation is 2-1/8" (54 mm).
  • Latch Bolt: The latch bolt is designed with a slant that faces the door frame, ensuring smooth engagement and disengagement with the strike plate.
  • Components: The lock package includes a latch (A), screws (B, C, D), a strike plate (E), a SmartKey® tool (F) for SmartKey locks only, keys (G), and knobs (J, H) for exterior and interior respectively. The SmartKey tool suggests that at least some variants of this lock incorporate Kwikset's re-keying technology.

Usage Features:

  • Adjustable Backset: A key feature is the adjustable backset, allowing the installer to switch between 2-3/8" and 2-3/4" settings by moving a pin on the latch. This is crucial for matching existing door preparations or adapting to new drilling requirements.
  • Reversible Latch Installation: The latch can be installed in two ways: either into a chiseled door edge or with a drive-in collar for non-chiseled door edges. This versatility accommodates different door types and aesthetic preferences.
  • Knob Assembly: The knobs are designed for easy assembly, with a twist-and-push mechanism to connect the interior and exterior components. The manual highlights the importance of aligning round edges and ensuring the latch bolt is pressed to install the exterior knob correctly.
  • Strike Plate Adjustment: The strike plate (E) can be adjusted if the latch bolt does not properly engage or if the door is loose when closed. This involves repositioning the strike plate or bending its tab to achieve a tighter fit, ensuring optimal security and door stability.
  • SmartKey® Technology (Optional): The inclusion of a SmartKey® tool indicates that some versions of this lock support Kwikset's re-keying technology, allowing homeowners to re-key their locks themselves in a few simple steps without removing the lock from the door.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning (Mechanical Lock): For the mechanical lock, the manual advises using a damp cloth to wipe away any excess dirt or debris. It explicitly warns against using harsh chemicals or solvents, which could damage the finish or internal mechanisms.
  • Cleaning (Electronic Lock): For the electronic lock, a damp cloth should be used on the lock's exterior to clean off dirt and debris. For interior components, a dry cloth is recommended, suggesting sensitivity to moisture for electronic parts.
  • Durability and Security Warning: The manual includes a critical warning that no lock, including this one, can provide complete security by itself. It advises that locks can be defeated by forcible or technical means and emphasizes the importance of caution, awareness, and common sense. It also suggests consulting a qualified locksmith or security professional to enhance security and reduce risk, especially given that builder's hardware is available in multiple performance grades. This highlights the need for ongoing vigilance and potentially professional security assessments beyond just the lock's installation.
