The Kwikset 64434/01 816 is a Key Control™ deadbolt, designed for enhanced security and management of access to a property. This device features two SmartKey cylinders: one for the property manager and another for the tenant. The property manager cylinder has its own unique key, providing an additional layer of control.
The primary function of this device is to secure a door using a deadbolt mechanism. The key control feature allows a property manager to maintain a master key for their cylinder, while tenants use a separate key for their cylinder. This setup is particularly useful in rental properties or multi-user environments where different levels of access are required. The deadbolt is operated by a key from the exterior and a thumbturn from the interior, providing both security and ease of exit.
To access the property manager cylinder, a SmartKey tool is inserted into the bottom hole of the faceplate and rotated. This action reveals the property manager cylinder, allowing for rekeying or access with the manager's key. It is crucial to install the deadbolt on the door before attempting to rekey the lock.
The deadbolt is designed to fit doors with a thickness of 1-3/4" (44 mm). It accommodates standard door preparations with a 2-1/8" (54 mm) cross bore. The backset is adjustable, supporting both 2-3/8" (60 mm) and 2-3/4" (70 mm) options. The latch bolt has a throw of 1" (25 mm), providing robust security.
The device comes with all necessary hardware for installation, including the latch, strike plate, screws, and keys. Additional tools that may be needed include a SmartKey tool (included), a wood block, and a measuring tape.
A critical warning is provided regarding the property manager's key: "To reduce the risk of unauthorized entry or access to property and consequential property loss or personal injury, this key must be kept in a secure location at all times or only in the possession of authorized personnel."
Furthermore, the manufacturer advises that "no lock can provide complete security by itself. This lock may be defeated by forcible or technical means, or evaded by entry elsewhere on the property. No lock can substitute for caution, awareness of your environment, and common sense. Builder's hardware is available in multiple performance grades to suit the application. In order to enhance security and reduce risk, you should consult a qualified locksmith or other security professional." This emphasizes that while the deadbolt enhances security, it should be part of a comprehensive security strategy.
