reselleroraLenovomarketingrepresentativetohavethesystemboardreplaced.Proofofpurchaseis
required,andafeewillbechargedforpartsandservice.
Harddiskpasswords
Thefollowingtwotypesofharddiskpasswordscanhelpprotecttheinformationstoredontheharddiskdrive:
•Userharddiskpassword
Ifauserharddiskpasswordhasbeenset,butnomasterharddiskpasswordhasbeen,theusermust
entertheuserharddiskpasswordtoaccesslesandapplicationsontheharddiskdrive.
•Masterharddiskpassword
Themasterharddiskpasswordalsorequiresauserharddiskpassword.Themasterharddiskpassword
isusuallysetandusedbyasystemadministrator.Itenablestheadministratortoaccessanyharddisk
driveinasystemlikeamasterkey.Theadministratorsetsthemasterpassword;thenassignauser
passwordforeachcomputerinthenetwork.Theusercanthenchangetheuserpasswordasdesired,but
theadministratorstillcangetaccessbyusingthemasterpassword.
Whenamasterharddiskpasswordisset,onlytheadministratorcanremovetheuserharddiskpassword.
Settingaharddiskpassword
Beforeyoustart,printtheseinstructions.
Tosetaharddiskpassword,dothefollowing:
1.Turnoffyourcomputer.Waitforaboutveseconds,andthenturnonthecomputeragain.
2.Whenthelogoscreenisdisplayed,pressF1tostarttheThinkPadSetupprogram.
3.SelectSecurity➙Password➙Harddisk1Passwordbyusingthedirectionalkeys.
4.Apasswordwindowisdisplayed.YouarepromptedtoselectUserorUser+Master.SelectUserif
youwanttosetonlyoneharddiskpassword.SelectUser+Masterifyouwanttosetauserharddisk
passwordandamasterharddiskpassword,forexampleifyouareanadministratororasupervisor.
•IfyouselectUser,dothefollowing:
a.Whenawindowfortypingthenewpasswordopens,typeyournewpasswordintheEnterNew
PasswordeldandpressEnter.
b.IntheConrmNewPasswordeld,retypethepasswordyoujustenteredandpressEnter.
•IfyouselectUser+Master,dothefollowing:
a.First,setauserharddiskpassword.Whenamessagewindowpromptsyoutosettheuserhard
diskpassword,pressEntertocontinue.TypeyournewuserharddiskpasswordintheEnter
NewPasswordeldandpressEnter.RetypethepasswordintheConrmNewPassword
eldandpressEnter.
b.Then,setamasterharddiskpassword.Whenamessagewindowpromptsyoutosetthemaster
harddiskpassword.PressEntertocontinue.Typeyournewmasterharddiskpasswordinthe
EnterNewPasswordeldandpressEnter.RetypethepasswordintheConrmNewPassword
eldandpressEnter.
5.ASetupNoticewindowisdisplayed.PressEntertocontinue.
6.PressFn+F10.ASetupConrmationwindowisdisplayed.SelectYestosavetheconguration
changesandexit.
Thenexttimeyouturnonyourcomputer,typetheuserormasterharddiskpasswordtostartyourcomputer
andaccesstheoperatingsystem.
