restraintsisadecisionthatshouldbebasedoneachpatient’sneedsandshouldbe
madebythepatientandthepatient’sfamily,physicianandcaregivers,withfacility
protocolsinmind.Caregiversshouldassessrisksandbenetsofsiderail/restraint
use(includingentrapmentandpatientfallsfrombed)inconjunctionwithindividual
patientneedsandshoulddiscussuseornon-usewithpatientand/orfamily.Consider
notonlytheclinicalandotherneedsofthepatientbutalsorisksoffatalorserious
injuryfromfallingoutofbedandfrompatiententrapmentinoraroundthesiderails,
restraintsorotheraccessories.
Consultacaregiverandcarefullyconsidertheuseofbolsters,positioningaidsoroor
mats,especiallywithconfused,restlessoragitatedpatients.Itisrecommendedthat
siderails(ifused)belockedinthefulluprightpositionwhenthepatientisunattended.
Makesureacapablepatientknowshowtogetoutofbedsafely(and,ifnecessary,how
toreleasethesiderails)incaseofreorotheremergency.Monitorpatientsfrequently
toguardagainstpatiententrapment.
WARNING:Tohelppreventinadvertentbedexitsorfalls,ensurethedistance
betweenthetopofsiderails(ifused)andtopofmattress(withoutcompression)is
approximately4.5inches/11.4cm.Considerindividualpatientsize,position(relativeto
thetopofthesiderail),andpatientconditioninassessingfallrisk.
