Overview

This document describes the McQuay CEILING CONCEALED Chilled Water Fan Coil Unit, specifically the MCWD-2007 series. These units are designed for concealed ceiling installation in various commercial and residential applications.

Function Description

The McQuay MCWD-D series fan coil units (FCUs) are designed to provide a comfortable environment by delivering chilled water for cooling. They operate by circulating air over a coil containing chilled water, thus cooling the air before it is discharged into the conditioned space. The units are intended for ceiling concealed installation, making them suitable for spaces with limited ceiling height.

Important Technical Specifications

Models and Airflow: The MCWD-D series includes models ranging from MCW200D to MCW1400D, covering a wide range of nominal air flows (CFM). For instance, the MCW200D has a nominal air flow of 195 CFM (332 m³/h) at high speed, while the MCW1400D offers 1616 CFM (2748 m³/h) at high speed. The units are designed to operate effectively at external static pressures (ESP) of 50Pa and 75Pa.

Cooling Capacity: Cooling capacities vary significantly across models. For example, at 75Pa ESP and an entering air temperature of 27°C DB/19.5°C WB (with water inlet at 5.5°C and outlet at 14.5°C), the MCW200D provides a total cooling capacity of 2.1 kW (7165 BTU/h) and a sensible cooling capacity of 1.3 kW (4436 BTU/h). The largest model, MCW1400D, offers a total cooling capacity of 13.1 kW (44700 BTU/h) and a sensible cooling capacity of 9.7 kW (33100 BTU/h) under the same conditions.

Water Flow and Pressure Drop: Water flow rates are specified for each model and operating condition. For the MCW200D, the water flow rate is 0.223 m³/h (0.981 USGPM) with a water pressure drop of 5.7 kPa (0.827 PSI) under standard cooling conditions. The MCW1400D requires 1.368 m³/h (6.019 USGPM) with a pressure drop of 30.3 kPa (4.394 PSI). The pressure drop charts illustrate the relationship between water flow and pressure drop for the coil, excluding connections and valves.

Power Supply and Input: All units operate on a 220V/1PH/50Hz power supply. Rated power input ranges from 74W for the MCW200D to 555W for the MCW1400D.

Sound Pressure Level: Sound pressure levels are provided for various ESPs and fan speeds. For the MCW200D at 75Pa ESP, the overall sound pressure level is 43.5 dB(A) at high speed, 42.9 dB(A) at medium speed, and 39.6 dB(A) at low speed. The MCW1400D at 75Pa ESP has an overall sound pressure level of 53.6 dB(A) at high speed, 53.0 dB(A) at medium speed, and 50.3 dB(A) at low speed.

Dimensions and Weight: The units feature a compact design with a low height, making them suitable for tight ceiling spaces. For example, the MCW200D has a length of 714mm, width of 534mm, and height of 251mm, with a net weight of 21 kg (46.2 lbs). The MCW1400D has a length of 1664mm, width of 599mm, and height of 295mm, with a net weight of 57 kg (125.4 lbs).

Coil Specifications: Standard units are equipped with a 4-row coil for 2-pipe systems. The coil features 3/8 inch seamless copper tubes with slit-type aluminum blue fins, mechanically bonded to the tubes. Each coil includes a manual air vent and two Rc3/4 water pipe connections, designed for a working pressure of 1.6MPa. The fin per inch count is 11.

Fan and Motor Specifications: The units utilize direct-driven centrifugal fans with forward-curved blades, statically and dynamically balanced, constructed from high-quality hot-galvanized steel. The motors are 3-speed, 220V-240V, single-phase, 50Hz, permanent split-capacitor type with ball bearings and built-in automatic reset thermal overload protection. Motor insulation is class B.

Drain Pan: The drain pan body is constructed from cold-rolled steel with integral cupping, sprayed with plastic coating on both sides. The outer wall is lined with 6mm heat-insulating PE foam and high-quality adhesive. It extends under the full length and width of the coils and is pitched for positive drainage, offering high anti-corrosion, anti-condensation, and high fire reluctance properties.

Filter: All units are supplied with a washable, double-layer nylon media filter, 25mm thick, set in an aluminum frame.

Operating Limits:

  • Maximum water-side pressure: 16 bar
  • Minimum entering water temperature: 3°C
  • Maximum entering water temperature: 95°C
  • Minimum air inlet temperature: 5°C
  • Maximum air inlet temperature: 43°C
  • Power supply: 220-240V / 1Ph / 50Hz

Usage Features

Higher Cooling Capacity in High Delta T Application: These units are specifically designed for applications requiring high external static pressure and high Delta T (chilled water temperature difference). The specially designed fans, motors, coils, and their optimized combination allow for increased cooling capacity under these conditions.

Low Chilled Water Pressure Drop: The FCUs incorporate an optimized water circuit design, validated in national thermal test rooms, to ensure excellent performance and a low chilled water pressure drop, meeting demanding customer requirements.

Extra High Air Flow Volume at High ESP: The MCWD-D series can deliver significant air flow even at high external static pressure. The 10 available models cover an air flow range from 340 to 2380 CMH at medium speed with an ESP of 75Pa in wet coil conditions.

Flexibility: Units are available with left or right-hand water connections. This configuration can be easily switched in the field by repositioning the fan-motor assembly and the supply air flange assembly.

Compact Design: The low height of these fan coil units makes them ideal for concealed installation in ceilings with limited space.

Low Noise Design: The enlarged fan wheels allow for lower fan RPM selection while maintaining the required external static pressure and airflow, significantly reducing noise levels.

Easy Installation: The units are designed for concealed ceiling installation with pre-drilled holes for hanging. Proper space for installation, maintenance, piping, and electrical wiring should be ensured. The hanging rods must support the unit's weight, and the unit must be installed level.

Maintenance Features

Air Filter: The units include one-inch thick washable filters, held by a removable metal strip. These filters can be easily pulled out from the bottom for cleaning or replacement, simplifying routine maintenance.

Access to Internal Components: A removable bottom panel provides full access to the fan/motor assembly and other internal components, facilitating maintenance and servicing.

Quality Assurance: Each coil is factory tested for leakage at 3.3MPa air pressure while submerged in water. Every unit, including its moving components (fans and motors), undergoes computer-testing and recording before being packed, ensuring high quality and reliability.

Installation and Maintenance Personnel: Installation and maintenance should only be performed by qualified personnel familiar with local codes and regulations and experienced with this type of equipment.

Safety Precautions:

  • Sharp edges and coil surfaces are potential injury hazards; direct contact should be avoided.
  • Moving machinery and electrical power pose severe personal injury or death hazards. Power must be disconnected and locked off before servicing equipment.

Electrical Wiring: Electrical wiring connections must adhere to the provided wiring diagram. The unit must be properly grounded to the building's earth system, and all field wiring must comply with national wiring regulations and Fire Department regulations. An appropriate strain relief device must be used for power wires at the terminal box, which includes a 7/8" knockout hole for field installation.

Insulation: Proper insulation material should be used for chilled water pipes and all parts on the pipes, as well as for air ducts, to prevent condensation and ensure efficiency. The adhesive for insulation should be effective within a temperature range of 0°F (-18°C) to 200°F (93.3°C).
