Felling diagram: main cut
Main cut
Saw the main cut at least 50 mm above the undercut. Saw the main cut parallel to the undercut. Do not
saw the main cut all the way through the trunk, leave some holding wood in place to act as a hinge. This
prevents the tree from twisting and falling in the wrong direction. The tree will start to fall if you saw all the
way through the trunk. Stop sawing if you see that the tree will not fall in the required direction, or if the
chain gets stuck.
When the tree starts to fall, remove and switch off the saw, drop the saw and retreat along the retreat
route. Watch out for fallen branches so avoid tripping up.
Limbing
Follow these instructions to remove branches from a felled tree. Leave large branches that are supporting
the tree on the ground in place to start off with. Cut off small branches with one cut. Branches that are
under pressure must be sawn from underneath and up to prevent the saw jamming.
Limbing the tree
Keep the tree at a distance from the ground. Leave branches supporting the tree on the ground in place
until the trunk has been sawn.
