Procedure
1. Prepare the flash drive.
a. On an empty, FAT32 formatted flash drive create a file named “mc_magc.dat”.
b. Use a text editor to place the following two lines in the file:
INCLINATION_ANGLE=45.000
MAG_ORIENTATION=0
c. Replace the inclination angle in the file with the correct inclination angle (in degrees)
for your calibration location with up to 3 decimal places. The inclination angle can
be measured using the appropriate equipment, or can be found by entering your
location information to the following website:
https://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/geomag-web/#igrfwmm
d. Replace the orientation value with the best approximation of which axis on the
remote magnetometer points down to the ground. See Figure 4.1 above to
determine the orientation of the remote magnetometer. The choices are “0”, “1”, “2”,
“3”, “4”, and “5”.
e. Save the modified file and eject the flash drive from the computer.
2. Taxi the aircraft to the calibration location and orient the aircraft to heading 360.
3. Power down the MD302.
4. Insert the flash drive into the back of the MD302.
5. Power up the MD302, along with all aircraft systems.
6. Stay at heading 360. Hold motionless for 7 minutes from the time power was applied.
7. Turn the aircraft to heading 090 within 60 seconds. Hold motionless at 090 for 3
minutes.
8. Turn the aircraft to heading 180 within 60 seconds. Hold motionless at 180 for 3
minutes.
9. Turn the aircraft to heading 270 within 60 seconds. Hold motionless at 270 for 3
minutes.
10. Wait 3 more minutes for the unit to calculate and store the calibration to memory.
11. Shut down the MD302 and remove the flash drive from the unit.
12. Power up the MD302 with the flash drive removed. If the calibration was successful you
should receive a valid output label 320 with the calculated heading.
Note: The heading output (label 014 and 320) is gyroscopically stabilized. It is synchronized to
input data received via ARINC 429 from the installed MD32 Remote Magnetometer (priority 1) or
an external source (such as a PFD/AHRS system - priority 2 if both are installed). If MD32 or
ARINC heading reference is lost the output will continue without magnetic reference
(gyroscopically) for 10 seconds before being flagged as “No Computed Data” in the SSM field.
