Do you have a question about the Motorola solutions L5Q and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The L5Q is a License Plate Recognition (LPR) camera system designed for low-speed and low-volume residential traffic. It is optimized for collecting license plate data from vehicles traveling less than 45 MPH, in areas with an Average Annual Daily Traffic (AADT) of approximately 3500. The system includes the L5Q camera, antennas, a security enclosure, a solar panel kit, a shielded power cable, mounting brackets, and a cable lock.

Function Description:

The primary function of the L5Q camera is to capture images of license plates for recognition purposes. It is designed for continuous operation, especially when paired with the solar panel kit, which provides power and battery charging capabilities. The system can be configured and managed remotely using the Reconyx Connect application, allowing for adjustments to camera settings, date/time synchronization, and image capture parameters.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Camera Type: LPR camera.
  • Target Traffic Speed: Less than 45 MPH.
  • Target Traffic Volume: Approximately 3500 AADT.
  • Power Options: Can be powered by 12 AA Lithium Ion Batteries (12 pieces, sold separately) or via the Solar Panel Kit.
  • Firmware Version: Requires firmware version 0224a or later for certain features, such as remote date/time setting.
  • Application Version: Requires Reconyx Connect application version 1.1.0 or later for remote configuration.
  • Mounting Height (Recommended): At least 8 ft from street level, generally between 4 to 14 ft.
  • Infrared Sensor Aiming Distance: Varies with camera height:
    • 4 ft height: 55 ft aiming distance
    • 6 ft height: 56 ft aiming distance
    • 8 ft height: 57 ft aiming distance
    • 10 ft height: 58 ft aiming distance
    • 12 ft height: 59 ft aiming distance
    • 14 ft height: 60 ft aiming distance
  • Timing Offset (Time between pictures): Adjustable based on posted speed limit:
    • 40+ MPH: 0.2-0.4 seconds
    • 30-40 MPH: 0.4-0.6 seconds
    • 20-30 MPH: 0.6-0.8 seconds
    • < 20 MPH: 0.8 seconds
    • Default timing value is 0.4 seconds, adjustable in 0.2-second increments up to 1.0 second.
  • Total Event Time (Recommended): 2 seconds or greater to prevent false positives. Calculated as: 0.2 seconds + ((Number of Pics - 1) * (Time Between Pics)) + Quiet Period.
  • Battery Type Setting: Configurable for Lithium (Lith) or SC10 (default). External and NiMH options are also available for specific battery types.

Usage Features:

  • Easy Installation: The system is designed for installation on poles or flat wooden surfaces. It includes hose clamps and a 5 mm hex key for pole mounting, and lag bolts with an impact or socket wrench for wooden surfaces.
  • Adjustable Ball Mount: The security enclosure features a ball mount that allows for precise adjustment of the camera's aiming point, crucial for optimal license plate capture.
  • Solar Power Integration: The Solar Panel Kit provides a sustainable power source, reducing the need for frequent battery changes. The solar panel battery lead connects directly to the camera's power input.
  • Remote Configuration (Reconyx Connect App):
    • Date and Time Setting: Allows users to set the camera's date and time remotely, ensuring accurate timestamps on captured images.
    • Aim Mode with Motion Zone Overlay: Provides a visual overlay in the app to help users adjust the camera's aiming point, ensuring license plates are captured within the optimal recognition zone. The aiming point should be centered on the top of a red line and halfway between the center line (0) and either 0.5 or -0.5, depending on the lane of travel.
    • Image Shifting (Windowing): Enables horizontal and vertical adjustment of the image frame to accommodate camera placement and center the license plate capture zone. A negative value shifts the image left/down, a positive value shifts it right/up. This feature shifts the object in the frame but does not alter the motion trigger.
    • Motion Events Settings: Configurable parameters for image capture:
      • Motion Pictures: Enables/disables multiple image capture per event (always "on" for LPR).
      • Number of Pics: Sets the number of images captured per event (default is 3).
      • Quiet Period: Sets the minimum time between capture events (default is 0 for no delay, adjustable to reduce empty frames).
      • Sensitivity: Adjusts event detection sensitivity (default is Medium-Hi).
      • Schedule: Defines active capture times (default is 24/7).
    • Viewing Images: Allows users to view captured images, filter by camera, and verify license plate readability to confirm proper configuration.
  • Security Enclosure: Protects the camera from environmental elements and includes a Master Cable Lock for physical security, deterring theft and tampering.

Maintenance Features:

  • Battery Management: The system supports both AA Lithium Ion batteries and a solar panel for power. When using the solar panel, a desiccant pack should be placed in the battery compartment to protect against moisture.
  • Firmware Updates: Regular firmware updates (e.g., version 0224a) enhance functionality and enable new features, such as remote date/time setting.
  • Cable Management: Excess power cable can be secured with a zip tie to maintain a tidy and secure installation.
  • WEEE Directive Compliance: Products sold in EU countries feature a crossed-out trash bin label, indicating that electronic and electrical equipment should not be disposed of with household waste. Customers are advised to contact their local supplier or service center for waste collection information.
