What to do if Connection Manager displays "Device Error" status for a serial Multitech MultiConnect Cell Modem?

If the Multitech Modem displays a 'Device Error' status in Connection Manager for a serial device, it could be because another program is using the COM port. Try to free up the COM port for the device. Alternatively, the wrong COM port might be selected in the Settings tab. To fix this, go to the Settings tab, choose the COM port that matches the one your device is installed on, and click Apply. You can find the correct port in Windows Device Manager under Modems, by right-clicking your device and selecting Properties, then checking the Modem tab.

Why is my USB Multitech MultiConnect Cell not detected?

Mary SimmonsAug 7, 2025
If your USB Multitech Modem is not being detected, the issue might be with the power supply. Check the LS LED and Power LED (if your device has one). If these LEDs aren't continuously lit, the power supply is likely the problem. Inspect the cable and connections. Also, if the LS LED is not blinking, examine the cable and connections. Ensure the device is properly connected to your PC with the correct USB cable.

If Connection Manager isn't working and your connected device isn't detected, it's possible that the necessary drivers haven't been installed. To resolve this, uninstall and then reinstall Connection Manager. During the reinstallation process, be sure to select 'Install the modem driver'.

If your Multitech Modem device is not detected ('No Device'), go to the Settings tab and ensure that you've selected the correct modem type: either USB or Serial. If you're using a serial device, verify that all serial modem settings match the serial modem and serial port configuration. You can also try restarting Connection Manager or disconnecting and reconnecting the device.
