REFERENCE GUIDE
3HE 15453 AAAA TQZZA 01 Issue: 02
if the upgrade is only adding aggregation capacity and not changing the
throughput of the assembly, there is no service impact when applying the
upgrade
if the upgrade is changing the throughput of the assembly, the assembly will
reboot when the upgrade is applied
For classic CLI and MD-CLI applications of upgrades, the requirement for this reboot
is indicated at the time of the upgrade and there is an option to abort the upgrade.
The requirement for reboot is documented for the specific upgrade found in the
installation guide for the assembly.
3.1.5 Replacement Assemblies
For a specific IOM or XMA, the hardware that is installed in the chassis is checked
for both its card type and MDA type and its encoded FP4 level. If the provisioned
information for that assembly does not match the installed settings, that assembly is
not brought into service. This is the same result as if a card type was installed in a
slot that was provisioned for a different card type.
Installing a card that has a different level is not allowed. If a card needs to be replaced
by a spare card, that spare card must have the exact same 3HE part number as the
card it is replacing. The one exception to this rule is that the card variant that is the
highest functional level (high scale edge routing) and highest capacity level can be
installed and will come up for any provisioned license level. This allows the card to
be used to replace any of the other license levels in an emergency situation. The
configuration restrictions will still be applied at the provisioned license level even
though this highest-capacity card is installed.
Note: When applying an upgrade to an IOM and that upgrade requires a reboot of the IOM,
then any MDAs present in that IOM are also rebooted.
When applying an upgrade to an XMA and that upgrade requires a reboot of the XMA then
the XCM in which the XMA resides is also rebooted. If the XCM has second XMA installed,
then that second XMA is also rebooted.
