Qptimum
recording
level
Figure
4
One
of
the
elements
contributing
to
the
beauty
of
music
is
the
dynamic
range,
which
is
the
measure
of
the
contrast
between
the
quietest
and
loudest
passages
in
the
music.
To
capture
this
contrast
on
tape,
it
is
necessary
to
adjust
the
recording
level
so
that
the
loudest
passage
will
not
cause
distortion
by
saturating
the
tape.
However,
too
low
a
recording
level
will
hide
the
quietest
passages
beneath
residual
noise.
When
recording
sound
from
a
disc,
for
example,
it
is
first
necessary
to
find
the
loudest
passage
in
the
disc.
By
setting
the
deck
to
the
Record-Pause
mode
after
having
inserted
a
cassette
tape
in
the
deck,
the
recording
level
can
be
adjusted
without
actually
recording
sound
on
the
tape.
This
unit
is
equipped
with
the
digital
peak
level
memory
function,
which
allows
recall
of
the
maximum
value
of
the
peak
level
within
a
specific
time
period,
and
adjust
next
of
the
optimum
recording
level
for
it.
After
adjusting
the
recording
level,
play
the
disc
from
the
beginning
and
press
the
1‘
(pause)
button
@)
to
start
actual
recording.
Type
of
tape
to
be
used
The
use
of
C-120
tapes
is
not
recommended
because
they
are
very
thin
and
often
become
entangled
with
the
capstans
or
pinch
wheels.
Use
C-46,
C-60
or
C-90
tapes
whenever
possible.
The
chrome
(CrOz)
and
Metal
tapes
have
superior
recording/
playback
performances
than
“normal”
tapes.
