Do you have a question about the Philips FR 930 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Philips FR 930 Stereo Receiver is a state-of-the-art component from the Philips 900 series, engineered to deliver powerful sound with high definition, minimum noise, and distortion. It features a full-function remote control capable of managing the entire Philips 900 series HiFi system, as well as a TV set and a video cassette recorder. The receiver incorporates Enhanced System Intelligence (ESI) for increased ease of operation through extensive communication between system components. It also boasts high-precision, drift-free quartz-locked digital tuning across two wavebands, with the ability to store 30 frequencies in memory along with programmable station names.

Function Description

The FR 930 serves as the central hub for an audio-video system, integrating various sources and delivering amplified sound to speakers. It includes an amplifier section, a tuner section, and comprehensive control features.

Amplifier Section

The amplifier section handles audio signals from various sources, providing powerful output to loudspeakers. It allows for sound control adjustments such as volume, stereo balance, bass, and treble. The SOURCE DIRECT control can bypass tone and balance controls for a shorter signal path, aiming for higher fidelity. The receiver supports two pairs of speakers (A and B) with an impedance range of 8-16 ohms.

  • Output power (left/right): IEC (D≤0.7%) 63 Hz - 12.5 kHz 2x70W (8 Ω), Music Power (1 kHz, 8 Ω) 150 W.
  • Total harmonic distortion: 0.01% at 1 kHz.
  • Intermodulation distortion: ≤0.03%.
  • Power bandwidth: 10-50,000 Hz (at -3dB).
  • Frequency response: Linear inputs 10-30,000 Hz, ± 1 dB; Phono input 20-20,000 Hz, ± 1 dB.
  • Signal-to-Noise Ratio: Linear > 93 dBA; Phono > 75 dBA.
  • Stereo separation: > 65 dB.
  • Crosstalk: > 85 dB.
  • Damping factor: > 100 at 8 Ω.
  • Bass/Treble control: ± 10 dB at 100 Hz/10 kHz.
  • Acoustic bass: +2/4/6/8/10 dB at 80/150/250 Hz.
  • Input Sensitivity: Phono MD 2.5 mV at 47 kΩ (rated output); Linear inputs 150 mV at 22 kΩ (rated output); Digital input 500 mV p-p.
  • Outputs: Recording 150 mV at 2.5 kΩ; Headphones 8 - 1,000 Ω; Loudspeakers 8-16 Ω; Digital out 500 mV p-p.

Tuner Section

The tuner section provides FM and AM reception with digital tuning. It allows for automatic and manual tuning, as well as direct frequency entry. Up to 30 preset stations can be stored, each with a programmable station name of up to 5 characters. The tuner supports both mono and stereo FM reception, with an option to suppress noise from weak FM-stereo signals by switching to mono.

  • Wave range FM: 87.5-108 MHz.
  • Sensitivity: 1.0 μV.
  • Adjacent Channel Selectivity: 60 dB (400 kHz).
  • Total harmonic distortion (mono/stereo): 0.2%/0.4%.
  • Frequency response: 30-15,000 Hz +/-1.5 dB.
  • S/N ratio (mono/stereo): 80/72 dB.
  • Channel separation: 45 dB at 1 kHz.
  • IF-suppression: 70 dB.
  • Image rejection: 50 dB.
  • Wave range AM: 522-1611 kHz.
  • Sensitivity 26 dB S/N: 500 μV/m.

Usage Features

  • Power Standby/Off: The receiver can be switched on/off or into standby mode using the front panel button or the remote control.
  • Source Selection: Audio and video sources (PHONO, TUNER, CD, TAPE, LD, TV, VCR) can be selected via the rotary SOURCE SELECT knob on the front panel or dedicated keys on the remote control. Digital sources (CD, LD) are indicated on the display as "CD-DIGITAL" or "LD-DIGITAL." The VIDEO key allows selecting a video source independent of the audio source.
  • Speaker Control: Separate buttons for SPEAKER A and SPEAKER B allow switching on/off connected speaker pairs.
  • Display: The display shows the selected source, waveband (FM/AM), frequency or station name, preset number, and status indicators like TUNED, STEREO, MEMORY, and SLEEP.
  • Tuning: Automatic tuning searches for stations of sufficient strength. Manual tuning allows precise frequency selection using the TUNING UP/DOWN keys or direct entry with digit keys.
  • Preset Stations: 30 preset stations can be programmed and recalled using digit keys or the tuning +/- keys. Station names can be entered, changed, or erased.
  • SCAN Function: The remote control's SCAN key allows scanning through all stored preset stations, playing 10 seconds of each program.
  • Sleep Timer: The SLEEP key sets a time period (90, 75, 60, 45, 30, 15 minutes) after which the system automatically switches to standby.
  • Demo Mode: Holding the SLEEP key for more than 3 seconds activates a demonstration program showcasing various features on the display and volume control.
  • Enhanced System Intelligence (ESI): When AUTO SEL. is activated and ESI-compatible equipment is connected, the system enables automatic source selection (e.g., pressing PLAY on a CD player automatically selects CD as the source) and automatic stop (e.g., selecting TUNER stops the CD player).
  • Remote Control: The supplied remote control operates all units connected via ESI sockets and RC-5 compatible equipment. It requires two R03/UM4/AAA batteries. An optional EM 2200/2201 'Pyramid' remote-control receiver can extend control to another room.

Maintenance Features

  • Placement: Avoid direct sunlight or high-temperature areas near heating apparatus. Ensure sufficient ventilation around the unit as it produces heat. Do not cover any vents.
  • Cleaning: Use a chamois leather cloth slightly moistened with water for cleaning the cabinet. Avoid cleaning agents containing alcohol, spirits, ammonia, or abrasives.
  • Battery Care: Remove batteries from the remote control when they are run down or if the remote control will not be used for a long period.
  • Power Disconnection: To completely disconnect the set from power, remove the power plug from the wall socket.

General Information

  • Dimensions (w x h x d): 435 x 124 x 300 mm approx.
