Quicksilver 855WE — System & Component Overview and Operaon
For boats equipped with an L6 Verado, when turning the steering wheel, the helm pump forces
hydraulic uid through hoses to and from power assist pump, located on the starboard side of the
bilge. The power assist pump then pushes uid to the steering cylinder which is connected to the ller
arm on the engine. The cylinder moves the ller arm to either port and starboard, depending upon
the direcon the steering wheel is turned.
Filling and Maintenance
A hydraulic steering system rarely needs to be relled aer the system is bled. However, if you ever
need to add uid to the system, refer to the steering manufacturer’s manual for complete
instrucons.
On a six cylinder Verado powered boat, uid is added at the power assist pump, located in the port a
corner of the cockpit. To access, open the cockpit oor access hatch. Next, remove the cover on the
power assist pump and unscrew the cap. On boats without a power assist pump (L4 Verado and
standard four stroke engines), the ll is located on the top of the helm pump.
Refer to the steering manufacturer’s manual in owner’s manual packet for complete instrucons and
warranty informaon.
13. Engine Controls
Depending on the engine installed on your boat, you will either have a mechanical gear shi/throle
control unit or a “drive by wire” Digital Throle and Shi (DTS®) control unit. The control unit, located
to the starboard of the steering wheel, acvates both the shiing and throle for the engine.
To start the engine, the control unit must be in the NEUTRAL posion. When in neutral, the engine is
running, but the propeller is not spinning. There is a “Throle-Only” buon that when pressed, will
allow you to operate the throle without the propeller spinning. On the mechanical shi controller,
the buon is located at the center of the throle control, and when moved back to the center
posion, the buon will automacally re-engage the shiing mechanism.
