Do you have a question about the Quicksilver 88688A26 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The device described in this manual is a Quicksilver 8868A26 Single Handle Trim Control for marine applications. It serves as a remote control unit for operating both the shift and throttle functions of a marine power package, along with integrated trim and trailer switches.

Function Description:

This console-mount control provides complete one-hand operation for the shift and throttle. It is equipped with a neutral start switch, which is a critical safety feature designed to prevent accidental in-gear starting. The control handle's initial travel (approximately the first 40 degrees from neutral) engages the gears, while the remaining travel advances the throttle. A "Throttle Only Button" allows for engine throttle advancement without shifting gears, useful for starting the engine. The control also integrates a "Trim Switch" for adjusting the power package's trim (up and down) while the engine is under power, and a separate "Trailer Switch" for raising the power package to a desired height for trailering, launching, beaching, or shallow water operation.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model Number: 8868A26
  • Control Type: Single Handle, Console Mount
  • Compatibility: Designed for marine power packages. Specific cable installation procedures vary for "All Models except 250 hp 3.4 Litre Outboard and Above" and "250 hp 3.4 Litre Outboard and Above" for both starboard and port side installations.
  • Cable Type: Quicksilver throttle and shift control cables are recommended. Cables are not supplied with the control and must be ordered separately.
  • Cable Length: Critical for proper operation. Cables MUST BE THE CORRECT LENGTH to avoid kinks (from too-short cables) or unnecessary bends/loops (from too-long cables), both of which place extra stress on the cables.
  • Fastener Torque Specifications:
    • Control handle set screw: 60 lb. in. (7 N.m)
    • Cable end guide set screws: 20 to 25 lb. in. (2.3 to 2.8 N.m)
    • Shift cable fastener locknut: 20 to 25 lb. in. (2.3 to 2.8 N.m)
    • Throttle cable fastener locknut: 20 to 25 lb. in. (2.3 to 2.8 N.m)
    • Access cover and cable retainer screws: 60 lb. in. (7 N.m)
    • Remote control mounting screws: 1-1/2" (38mm) long, tightened securely.
  • Mounting Clearances:
    • Minimum 2" (50.8mm) hand clearance above the control.
    • Minimum 12" (30.4cm) radius for cable bends.
    • Control cables should extend straight downward for at least 3 ft. (1m) before bending.
    • Area directly under control must be free of obstructions (bulkhead, braces, etc.).
  • Trim System Compatibility: This trim control can only be connected to Power Trims equipped with a 2-solenoid trim pump. If the Power Trim has only one solenoid, a Trim Solenoid Kit must be purchased and installed.
  • Trailer Switch Hole Diameter: 2-1/8 in. (54mm)

Usage Features:

  • One-Hand Operation: Simplifies control of both shift and throttle.
  • Neutral Start Switch: Prevents engine from starting unless the control handle is in the neutral position, enhancing safety.
  • Throttle Only Button: Allows engine warm-up or starting without engaging gears.
  • Adjustable Control Handle Friction: A screw allows adjustment of the control handle tension to the desired level, preventing unwanted movement.
  • Adjustable Control Handle Detent Tension: A screw allows adjustment of the detent tension for the control handle.
  • Integrated Trim and Trailer Switches: Conveniently located on the control handle for easy access to power trim and tilt functions.
  • Port/Starboard Installation Flexibility: The control mechanism and trim switch can be altered for port side installation, requiring specific repositioning of internal components.
  • Cable Routing Guidelines: Emphasizes proper cable routing to prevent binding, kinks, or excessive stress, which can lead to hard shifting or binding throttle action.

Maintenance Features:

  • Regular Fastener Checks: Fasteners securing the remote control to the boat and control handles to the remote control should be checked for tightness at specified intervals.
  • Annual Inspection and Lubrication: The remote control assembly should be inspected and lubricated once a year, or whenever disassembled, or if operating effort increases. Quicksilver 2-4-C Marine Lubricant (or equivalent) is recommended for shift and throttle cable lubrication points.
  • Cable End Guide Set Screw Torque Check: Before installing cables in control modules, ensure cable end guide set screws are tight.
  • Neutral Start Safety Switch Harness Security: The harness should be secured every 18" (45.7cm) and kept away from water and potential pinching/cutting.
  • Protective Sleeve for Wiring: A protective sleeve must be positioned over wires behind the mounting bracket to prevent pinching or cutting.
  • Troubleshooting for Stiff Operation: Binding or stiffness in control handle operation is typically caused by cable issues (bends, tension, small radii) or tight engine linkage.
  • Trim Switch Overload Protection: The trim system includes an overload cut-out switch that stops the pump motor if the trim switch is held in the "DOWN" position after reaching its travel limit. A brief waiting period (approximately one minute) allows the switch to reset.
